First graff weathering project

Dear Peter,

...and what appears to be a reasonably simple design too, could be a good starter piece for a first-run at hand-applied graff weathering...

yes I've been tempted to try my hand at doing one. Among all the other little projects I've got backed up. Lol

Graffiti

I know it is an inescapable part of modern railroading and probably necessary in it's modeling, but please, let's not legitimize vandalism as "train art."

Art ?

I agree - although I do appreciate some of the efforts - I don't like their choice of canvas.

Let's not ...

... dictate to others what they can and can not model.  Modeling things as they appear is more important to some in this hobby than others; providing real examples to work from isn't such a bad thing.

In case you missed it...

Nara has left the building. So yes, perhaps, a similarly done wagon might be a way to remember a passed railway friend on your pike. I make no judge of the political correctness or legality of "artwork" on the wagon shown in the photo.

Vandalism

Although it may be a considered vandalism, we try to recreate realism in our hobby. Maybe train art was the wrong title....

Waste of talent

Good looking art, but such a waste of talent.  The time and amount of paint to accomplish this is amazing!

Of course it's art. The fact that it's vandalized doesn't lessen that in any way. Van Gogh would still be art if he had painted on the local bar's bathroom walls (with or without permission)

What would be ones perspetive

of whether this illegal act is art or not if it appeared on ones own house or vehicle?

I don't want a Picasso on my windshield but that doesn't mean it's not art even if it is also a crime at my expense.

It CAN be both. I'm not supporting vandalism in any way either.

Encouraging mis- behavior

I think the real point here is by saying anything positive about bad behavior is encouraging it. If someone did this to your property (car, house, boat or whatever) you would be very unhappy, no matter how good "the Art".. Remember Pavlov's dogs.

The positive is the art  makes the cars look a lot more interesting , but only those of us who grew up in pre graffiti days might appreciate that, younger folks probably don't know that boxcars were not always so colorful and individually unique? .....DaveB

This is unbelievable!

" The positive is the art makes the cars look a lot more interesting" A criminal act is interesting? That is just unacceptable. Yes modeling it is necessary for realistic effect, but vandalism is still not art and this cavalier acceptance as "art" just encourages this activity.

The problem is not the good art

The problem is all of the awful attempts most graffiti artists leave around. We have to look at many more of those than masterpieces. Same as any other art, I guess.

There's certainly a lot of it around so it must be acceptable to many folks?  I guess we could create medical tagging cards and license those scoundrels?  ....DaveB

If we set aside the legal

and safety issues for a moment, wouldn't more colorful trains be an improvement in sme ways? Airlines paint their planes (despite the fuel cost of hauling all of that extra paint everywhere), cities sell ads on busses, why couldn't the railroads be more colorful. They used to be. Much of the public hates trains because their only encounters are sitting at a crossing watching one brown box after another go by. Suppose the cars were more individual, maybe with ads or cartoons on them?

Suppose the paint shop just put a primer coat on, parked the cars on a secluded siding for a while, then picked them up and added reporting marks and a logo. In the meantime, the cars would have acquired some unique paint schemes.

My city has controlled the graffiti by encouraging building owners to put murals on blank walls. Now murals are all over town, and generally left alone by the taggers, who concentrate on small stuff. Many of these murals are grade school art projects. Suppose UP had a nationwide contest for designs from school students, and painted the top thousand entries on cars?

Problems can become opportunities if you give them a bit of thought.

Aircraft paint

Quote:

Paint serves a vital anticorrosion purpose on the fuselage. It is a functional part of the aircraft design. Colors and schemes are a gimme. They have to paint them anyway, why not make good marketing use of it.

O/T aircraft "art"

Dear MRHers,

It's drawing a long-bow, but do a Google Image Search for "Kulula Airlines"

You'll find results like this...
