Well, I haven't done much this summer in terms of trains.  Too many things to do around the house and trying to make the best of my daughter's last summer before she prepares for university.  But I digress.

It wasn't completely a non-train summer, though.  My two GMD1's from Rapido came, plus a couple Budd stainless steel VIA coaches (a special run by Rapido for VIA Rail).  But the one change I intended to make this summer after receiving my first GMD1 was switching out my Digitrax Zephyr for a NCE PowerCab.  The reason for this was twofold: I became frustrated that I could not access functions above 10 on the Zephyr and that I wanted more of a walkaround throttle.  Having repeatedly heard great things about the NCE system, I took the plunge.

Well, today I finally got to hook up the NCE system (it came last week) and try out my newest GMD1 loco:

This is where it all went terribly wrong.  I hooked everything up according to the instructions:

And when I plugged it in to the wall, the PowerCab came alive:

With the train on the track, I attempted to get control.  But nothing.  After re-checking everything, still nothing.  I thought, well, maybe there is a chance something is wrong with the loco, so I pulled out one of my other locos that I know works fine.  Nothing.  Next was to check my caboose on the track that has track powered lighting.  Nothing.

So, I'm getting no power to the tracks whatsoever.  I'm more than a little frustrated.  I'm quite sure it is all hooked up as needed, but thought I'd post the pictures here and see if anyone notices anything out of line or see if anyone has any suggestions.  My next step is to ensure that my DC power pack still works using the existing wiring, but I'm fairly confident that will be the case.

My next step is to email NCE and see what they have to say, but figured if it was something obvious, I'd get a response here first.

You are using the wrong cord.

You are using the wrong cord. You have to use the flat cord and it has to be plugged into the left socket.

You are using the correct socket

Ha!

I knew someone would point out the error of my way quickly.  I never noticed there was a second cord in the box when I took everything out, so the "flat cord" didn't make sense to me.  Should have checked it out.  So is the coiled cord for a second cab?

extra cable

Yes, the second is for an additional cab, or if you want to use your Power Cab on another layout as a regular cab.  The flat cable is 6 wire and the coiled one is 4 wire.  The extra wires are for track power.

I made a similar mistake when I hooked up my PowerCab

Greetings,

Don't feel bad,I had a similar problem first time out of the box with my Power Cab but instead of the wrong cord, I plugged the throttle into the wrong jack. Once I figured that out it worked perfectly.

I've had the PowerCab a few years now and it's a great system. I've added some panels and bought an extra walk around cab and it works great. I still have a lot to learn about the PowerCab and DCC in general, but I think you'll find it a very easy system to use. Also, it's very expandable. Enjoy.

Lesson learned

Thanks, guys.  It was pretty simple to figure out basic things without reading a bunch of documentation.  Easier than the Zephyr, but maybe that is because I'm more familiar with DCC now than I was when I got the Zephyr.  As far as simplicity, though, my RailPro is still the simplest.

Do yourself a favor

Dave

Dave, do yourself a favor and take the time to read the manual.  Then in two or three weeks read it again.  It's the best way to get your money's worth out of the equipment.

DCC documentation is pretty horrible, but NCE's power pro manual is better than most.
