Building Ward’s Salvage

ColorPic.jpg Many years ago I bought a craftsman kit for a junkyard. It was a John Rendall model. The wood was rough but it turned into a decent looking diorama. My late teen’s skills shone through in several areas but I was proud of the scale 2x4 walls that I built. A real box o’ sticks build. I eventually sold the entire diorama on eBay for some unremembered amount.

When a good modeling friend of mine passed he bequeathed all his model railroad stuff to me. Among the items was a JV Models version of Ward’s Salvage. The kit looked like it used much more refined wood. However, parts were missing, including instructions. Thanks to the kindness of strangers on another board, I obtained a copy of the drawings and instructions. They are sketchy at best. No improvement over the original. They do provide a launching point for an interesting model.

s800x486.jpg I photocopied the drawings and cut out some fast paper outlines of the buildings to get a feel of size and layout. See Figs 1&2.

I wasn’t really happy with the roofline of the office. The extension seems off somehow. I redrew the drawing and photocopied it onto cover stock. I made a quick mock up of the office without the extension. See Fig3

I wasn’t happy with the garage either. I liked the idea of an addition, but something was off with the rooflines and the height of the building looked too short for the garage door. Again, I redrew the drawings with a flat roof, a slightly taller wall and kept the addition. The instructions say that all the buildings have the same vertical wood siding but I feel the addition should have something different, maybe corrugated metal. See Fig4

While I was at it I thought I should have a mock up of the traveling crane and its associated shed. With some more photocopying, bending and gluing, I had a mock up that I can use to position the tracks on my planned Inglenook Layout.
