These pics are from Wednesday in the National Narrow Gauge Convention Contest Room and are in no particular order, nor do they represent all the models entered or even present at the time I was there.  Most if not all are just plain stunning in person. These will give you a snapshot, I'll add the rest as the first comment. I hope you enjoy them. (Most you can click on and get the larger pic) --Geoff Bunza

Stunning work by all.  The rusty old bed springs really caught my eye.  I don't recall ever seeing that detail in a model scene...ever. Thanks for sharing with everyone.

Z scale farm scene

"If I remember correctly the above is scratch built Z Scale!"

You are correct, it is all scratch built. The only kit parts are the Z scale truck from Showcase Miniatures, and one red wagon from RS Laser. The other wagon by the silo is scratch built using the wheels only from RS Laser. The house was based on a Campbell kit in HO.

I noticed you also show several more of my models, thanks.

Great show, wish some of the other venders had made it that were on the list.

Hey Dr. Geoff,

Did is you happen to hear who won the ongoing mfg.'s award for 'most deserving sound' this year?

Just wondering,

Cows of course

Hi Jim,

I think it was the diorama with the long horn cattle. Winners should be posted on the NNGC site.

'Missed seeing you at NNGC. Some great modeling to be found there.

Best regards,

Geoff

Cattle eh?

Dear Dr. Geoff,

I'll hear about it officially at some point.  I really wanted to be there but the wallet just wasn't fat enough. There's always some of the best modeling in the Hobby at the NNGC... always some of the best modelers too.

Say 'Hey' to Linn (sp?),

Question about a photo...

One of the photos shows a red structure for mining and part of it appears to be in a glass box while another part appears to be outside the glass.  Is there a story that goes with it?

Glass question

Yes, one of the dioramas had a glass case around it. I was trying to shoot it in a way to minimize the enclosure effect. No other story that I am aware of.

Best regards,

Geoff

Thanks Very Much!

I sure appreciate the posting of photos from the convention. I was registered for it, and was half-way across Kansas, when I got called back to Denver for work - kind of a downer!

Thanks again for the pic's!

NNG modeling

Really just wonderful photos of some terrific modeling.  I am envious of the surfaces people are getting through painting and texturing.  The standard of the hobby has gone w-a-y up in this area.

On the other hand, it is amazing how bad some of the figures are in the smaller scales.  In one of the Thursday photos, I think I see Mrs Spumoni getting ready to hang out the wash.  This is a Weston-Campbell product, IIRC, and has been on the market since the early days of John Allen.  These models show so much work that it is a shame to populate them with little lumps of antimony-lead.

Something similar is going on in some of the lettering, where retro but incorrect lettering styles and layout scream "model".  We can do better.
