Hi all.

I scrapped the previous layout and started again.

This is a usual thing for me: If I don't like what I'm building, I'm not afraid of dismantling the work I've done.

This Sunday morning, while the family was still sleeping, I got the showcase out of the layout room, stored it until the new owner can come here and take it, and scrapped the previous benchwork.

Now I need to get new blades for the jig saw, so that I can start cutting the dimensional lumber I bought from Brico Depot at Loures- a little town to the north of Lisbon (which has nicer prices for lumber and plywood).

This is the layout room after all the work was done. Time to start making some saw dust.

Like a kid

Well, I am one. Eheheh. A 33 old "kid".

Got the blades for the jig saw today, and here it is... My Sunday evening.

002.jpg 003.jpg Lumber is 1" x 2" and 1" x 3". Also built the legs, but I don't have any light on the room for any good photos. Still need to build the light supports. The legs are attached to the benchwork by screws. That way, the structure is more reliable.

Bes wishes

Hi all.

The benchwork is now complete. Thanks to my father's teachings, I can do some wood work. It's not that perfect, but it's always something that I like to do.

So, total size of the layout will be, for now, 2922 x 400 mm, with the tracks at 1000mm from the floor. Not the perfect height (should be between the arm pit and the elbow), but it's what I can manage on the space I have.

I built the benchwork in a modular style, but I still need the alignment dowels. C&L Finescale have them in metal, but they are expensive. I need to find a cheaper source. Now let's see what I have done this weekend.

The layout in its full extension.

The support frame for the smaller 900mm module

Shelf to keep the module stored, while I need to get access to my workbench.

Still to figure out if the track plan suits my needs. I love Grain elevators, I have been reading Tom Johnson's INRAIL layout blog post again and again...

Thank you for your time.

Alignment

You can make your own alignment devices. Use metal tubing to make a sleeve, then bolts, washers and nuts for the connectors.

If you search via Google for "pattern makers dowels" there are a number of model railroaders posting how hard they are to find, how expensive etc.
