Blizzard?

Is the backdrop one of a blizzard?  All I see on my iPad is white - and no link.

maybe you are too zoomed in :> ) , it's a mountain scene reminiscent of the Matterhorn as seen from twin lakes campground over by Bridgeport. .DaveB

You're right!

OK guys - this has nothing to do with model railroading, but as a result of attempting to paint my own backdrop for my layout I became interested in painting.  I ended up purchasing a printed backdrop as my painting wasn't up to my standards.

Fast forward a few months.  I received a 20 DVD "How to oil paint" for my birthday and after watching it and Youtube videos on painting today I painted my first oil painting based on the artist Wilson Bickford.  I'm happy with my first try and encouraged to do more.  Don't worry - I'm not giving up model railroading!

It CAN be done

As a kid in junior high, my folks signed me up for oil painting lessons with a wonderful 80 year old lady.  I am by no means an artist, but with those lessons I picked up a foundation in the basics: working with color; light and dark, shadows and highlights and understanding perspective.  That's really all you need.

Two additional sources worth checking out:

1) the background painting series on TrainMasters TV is very good.  Chris Lyon helps take the 'fear factor' out of attempting to creating hand painted backdrops.   http://shar.es/112u1T

2) Darryl Huffman has two DVDs on painting backdrops that he sells on eBay.  He gets it and can teach you how to get amazing results without a ton of effort.

It can be scary, but with a little practice and patience, I'll second what Art said: You can do it!  Plus, the skills you develop will be useful in many other aspects of your modeling. Here's an incomplete corner of my layout using techniques from the things mentioned above (my apologies for the bad lighting):

One more

I almost forgot...Joe's Siskyou Line DVD series has a quick 10 minute crash course on painting a backdrop.  For $1.99 you can download it right now and have some decent results before the weekend is up!

YT embed link

The code on youtube for embedding is located here:

_misc_50.jpg

Then you use the filmstrip button in the MRH editor to insert this code in your post.

I'm sorry I don't have an android device to confirm the code location on the youtube page.

Many Thanks

It took a while to click all the right buttons but I got it.  Thanks a ton.  You cannot do this form android table. Does not give you these options on YT app.  I fixed another video from my PC.  Will go back in a little while and start fixing many of the recent videos.

Thanks again
