Decided I'd try and model the FRA yellow reflectors that we're starting to see on a lot of rolling stock. They were mandated by the FRA in 2005, but even today in 2014 not all older pieces of rolling stock has them. I probably won't put them on all my stuff... just a select few. The stuff I used is ("GREAT PLANES" KWIKSTRIPE - model striping tape. 1/16th" yellow)

Looks good

I like that the tape has a little visible thickness.  While a decal is probably closer to scale thickness, the tape gives the impression of a sticker added to the car - which is exactly what the stripes are.  Job well done, sir!

Reflective tape

I've added stripes using actual reflective tape.  When peeled off its backing it is not too thick.  the added benefit is that when you photograph the the car it actually reflects just like on the prototype.

Changing era?

Shaun, did you update your era?  I was thinking you originally said you were modeling 1982, but this post (2005+) and your earlier pics of your ex-CNW SD40-2s (1995+) would seem to indicate that you're inching forward.  I model quite a bit of 2005-era UP stuff due to trackage rights they had over the IAIS and a shared IAIS/UP intermodal ramp, so I just wondered if I was getting some company.

Switch Era's

Hello Joe!

Not really "switching" era's, but just adding a few thing here and there. I didn't want to be tied down to just 1982 and prior.. I like all kinds of era's so It'll most likely end up being a mixture of a few things.

Thanks,

Shaun

Example using reflective tape

Here's an example of a tank done with reflective tape.  When photographed with a flash or at the proper angle you see the tape actually refect.

Reflective tape

I have 1/16 yellow Kwikstripe. If I were to use reflective tape where would I get a small enough width and amount for modeling requirements. That said, what about the thickness, decal to thin reflective to thick maybe?

Thanks

Wayne

I'd like to know the variations available too?  Thickness and colors and place to order? Anyone have experience buying this stuff?  ...DaveB
