Found this site and thoughtful comparison of fun, enjoyment and satisfaction. My initial read left me cold and thus I considered his opinion not so thoughtful. However, mulling it over the past few weeks, I find Simon's take on satisfaction to be accurate for my approach to hobby. Perhaps the fun is built upon a foundation of satisfaction? Thanks for the shout out!

Thanks for that. You comment posted on the blog sums things up very nicely, I thought.

You're welcome!

It really is a well-written and well-reasoned essay, Simon, if I may use that term to describe it. I'm pleased that so far no one here has made the same mistake I initially made by tarring it as "elitist." "Modeling Railroading is satisfying" or "Having satisfaction with trains" may not stimulate the marketing gurus' endorphines, but it's much closer to reality.

Happy is my measure

To me, I'd rather use a different term altogether than any of the ones in the essay. Model railroading is part of being happy in my life.  And my relationship with model railroading is like any other lasting relationship.  It will not always be satisfying (though on the whole it is.)  It will not always be enjoyable, as sometimes it can be downright frustrating.  And it will not always be fun - sometimes it will seem more like work.  Sometimes, the fun is what gets me past the rough spots of dissatisfaction with something or frustration over a particularly troublesome issue to be resolved.  So maybe I stop and run a train a while for a bit to just have some fun and at that moment my model railroad is, indeed, good enough.  Overall I get stretches of each and it all adds up to being an element of my happy life alongside a wonderful wife and family, a comfortable modest home, and a job that I I like going to most days.
