I'm looking over my Train Shed Cyclopedia on box cars. Noting the differences in AAR specs and various roads' variations over the years, I have a question on dreadnought ends. When the car height went from 9'6" or 10' to 10'6" or beyond, where was the extra height added to the ends? Was it between the ribs? At the joint? At the bottom?  At the top? Did it vary by manufacturer?

I have several dimensioned drawings of the cars in the book, but none show measurements over the ends except overall height, so I'm at a loss to figure out where the height was added in the stamped steel ends.

It is best to find photos of the different cars that you want to model. Often the extra height as added to the top of the end resulting in a larger space at the top. Once the end was tall enough to require another rib the manufacture would do that.

Extra height...

So this would be difference between a 5/4 and a 5/5 end?
