Oregon Pacific Railroad

One Module at a time.

I will post to this construction blog as the modules are completed. Currently I do not have a layout room, but expect to have one completed spring 2015.

1777 SE Milport Road, Milwaukie, Oregon

First Module

I finally completed on the weekend.

This view would be from SE 17th Ave.

The building is made from gator board and 60 grit sand paper and will serve as the warehouse until some time in the future. Trees need a little more work on the trunks but will not be permanent until the layout is constructed. The dead leaves were bought, but I don't like the color so I will gather some real leaves this fall.

Time to start the next module.

That was quick!

Looks like a pretty good start!  How big are the modules?  Looks like it is just a rigid foam base for now?  Any plans for a frame around the baseboard?  Thanks for sharing.

Modules

Wow, quick response Dave O.

This module is 16" X 35".  and was slowly completed during the summer. Hopefully, my weeks per module will improve as the nights get longer.

Most will be three to four feet long and 16" wide. The modules along the wall in the lower part of the plan will be 12" wide. I am keeping module size down to allow the modules to be built while sitting at a desk.

I have used the rigid foam before and prefer it. Since these modules will be permanent on the future layout, I am not worried about damage and have used similar style with a temporary under the shelf O scale on open box bench work.

Future finishing and bench work is still in the planning stage.

Thanks

Layout concept

I very like the very realistic layout concept of a modern railroad serving an industrial district. Quite reminds me of the layouts of Lance Mindheim.

Certainly not origional

Definitely Lance Mindheim is an influence, but so would be Mike Confalone, Tom Johnson, Paul Dolkos and many others who have modeled a prototype or submitted articles over the past four decades.

Did I set out to do a layout like Lance Mindheim's... definitely not.  I did set out to find a modern Class III railroad that had a SW9 still in service.

Turns out the Oregon Pacific Railroad has a SW9 and the color pattern is similar to the 2 rail O scale locomotive I have. In addition, I can almost model the industrial area without compression and the history from 1960 to present offers a lot of future modeling if I get tired or the 2000+ era.

The Molalla branch of the OPR will provide a future modeling venture and will  look similar to Tom Johnson's or the Grimes Lines.

Since art is my weakness, I can only hope to match the realistic achievements of the others.
