Weathering

Great start this week!  Here is the other side of the loco I finished weathering last week. I used oil paints for the majority of it with the fade and overall grime applied with an airbush.  I have to hit the fuel filler with some pink paint though and the smallest touch of powders around the bottom of the trucks.

I took a bunch of pictures with the cell phone and focus stacked them Photoshop with a just a touch of Unsharp Mask to sharpen it up.

2-8-0 consolidation in Sn42 - Yes, that's a scale.

You know, there is a ton of cool narrow gauge stuff in Latin America that's begging to be modeled.

This is a modified a Bachmann On30 2-8-0.  I shortened the tender, changed out the tender trucks, built a smaller cab, rearranged the domes and other detail parts, lengthened the running boards, wrapped and detailed the cylinders to make it into a piston valve engine, scratchbuilt a steel pilot and painted and lettered it.  Now it's an S scale model of a 42 inch gauge Baldwin export locomotive.

Primer Breakthru

Dear Andrew,

Don't you hate when the primer breaks thru a thin/poor-coverage topcoat?

Any chance of a quicky description of the technique?

Happy Modelling,

Primer on Primer

Hi Prof

Its easier than it looks, it just takes a bit of time.

After washing and letting the loco air dry for a day give it a fading spray of ModelMaster Light Gull Grey - make a very thin wash and build up the fade.  I usually do a few coats, waiting for it to dry between coats (its such a thin coat that you can't really see the color until the thinner evaporates).

I mixed up a flesh colored oil paint using some cadmium red, soft mixing white, bit of vandyke brown (I think those were the colors, but you get the idea).  This took a while to get right, and in the in progress picture you can see the primer picture is a bit too pink (ok --it's really pink)

9_inprog.jpg

I then put the model in front of the prototype picture (on my laptop in this case) and started dabbing on the color panel by panel, matching the photo where I could.  I used a fine bush with a light load of paint, almost dry brushing in fact, building up the color.

Streaks were added by applying the paint and using a makeup sponge (put on the paint with the brush, then drag the paint down using the sponge)

Once all the primer was added to the side I then went over the primer with a makeup sponge, in a tapping motion, avoiding the white stripes, to flatten out the brush marks (this also softened the edges).  I also used straight turpentine with a clean brush to remove some paint in some areas followed by more makeup sponge tapping.

The blacks were done using a mix of paynes grey and soft mixing white thinned with the turpentine, the white fade on the blower duct was done in the same way.

I let the paint dry for a week, and repeated the same process on the other side followed by another week of drying. Then the top and ends were done followed by another week of drying.  I then finished up with a spray of my grimy mix of ModelMaster Dark Skin tone and Dark Gull Grey, same as the fade coat  -- build it up in thin coats.

Finally, I shot some Model Master Aircraft International black on the roof.

Andrew

Great Consolidation!

That looks great!  Did capture enough photo during the build to make it an article for MRH?  Hey JoeF! Did you see this Consolidation?

Wow!

Really nice work all around this week!

Shannon, nice work on that SD20-2 rebuild.

Andrew, that CN Geep is stunning!  I love the primer work.

Gary, I've just plain run out of superlatives for your work and photos, but the word "Wow" goes through my head every time I see your submissions.

I already posted these to my blog, but since they're my first update pics of the YEAR, and it's already August, I'm going to take a chance and risk overexposure.   Below are a few pics of the backdrop photos I recently finished putting up on the section of the layout between Atlantic and Hancock Jct., Iowa.  I still have to add them to my entire peninsula plus a few feet on either side, but I hope to be done with all backdrop pics sometime in October.  I'm waiting until all are done to go back and touch up the seams and finish blending them into the adjacent 3D scenes, after which time I plan to get busy on my first bridges.

re: Great Consolidation

Den,

Thanks!

I didn't take very many photos during the build unfortunately.  I'll certainly have to do that for my next project.  I have one picture from when I first started.  It's shown here laying over a side view of the prototype I found on Wikipedia, scaled to to size, which I used to get most of the dimensions.  It's remarkable how closely the Bachmann model fits the proportions of this prototype.

Wow!  I feel like I need my sweatshirt or something a little heavier looking at that photo!  Looks like a typical Spring or early Winter late afternoon in New England.  The 'drone' shot is great for the overall scene, but the ground shot - wow! - almost couldn't tell it was a model!  Great composition, great modeling and weathering, and just the right amount of haze in the backdrop to make it feel like it is a lot farther away than it is.  Makes me feel like I am back east!

Thanks!

More than decent.  Nice modeling, composition, and lighting.  At first I thought it was a diorama outside in the sunlight (then clicked on image info and realized it was indoors).  What kind of lighting do you have?

Thanks.

Lighting

It's just shop lights from Home Depot.  There about $12 and hold 2 bulbs.  I have 3 of them in my 10X10 office.
