OzarkBelt

Hello all. I am wanting to add some passenger cars to my layout. Here is the catch: I don't have a lot of funds laying around.  I have two OLD Life-Like passenger cars (60' scale length, train set quality) that I am working on fixing up to higher quality models. So far so good with the working on them.. But, I need to find more.

Does anyone know where I can find some of these cars, cheaply? (like $5 or less?) They are certainly low quality, for sure, but it seemed easier to me to find some of those to rework rather than scratch-build entirely. (My layout is small: 40"x 60" so I prefer the "shorty" versions of the longer cars. On a small layout, it is not as noticeable the length difference since everything else is under 50' (scale).

I have been doing some searching, but not really sure where to find them..... Thanks in advance for any ideas!

Roundhouse

I don;t know about the life-like, but Roundhouse shorty coaches are oft on ebay, and sometimes very cheap.  A bath in isopropyl alcohol, and the existing paint comes right off with an old toothbrush.  They can end up looking quite nice, too.

Don't forget Rivarossi's

Don't forget Rivarossi's (IHC's) 60' cars too. Available on EBay and Pennsy and Chicago N.W.ern (I think) via Walthers catalog. They'll be a bit more expensive and you'd likely need to buy one of the sets but they're quite nice and run well.
