*** UPDATED 9-8-14 *** Scroll down to see additional work on the structure.

It doesn't look like much, but I'm making (slow) progress on the Palmer structure for my layout.  I've got the walls cut out and a few other details in the works.  It's a good thing I don't try to make a living doing this!

Great minds, Mr Bill!

Great minds think alike!   I just received an order from Walthers yesterday that contained just that item! - #541-1008.  Thanks for the suggestion.

Palmer progress as of 9-3-14

SLOWLY but surely I'm making progress on the structure.  Please be aware I've got lots of work to do on the corner joints, weathering, etc...  Since this structure will be in the foreground and has large windows I'll be detailing the interior.  As you can see from this picture I've added a printed brick wall to the back and end walls that are visible.  I'll also be adding an interior office, machinery, and misc. junk / items.

I've got the overhead door channel and door installed on the structure.  The door is a piece of corrugated styrene siding that I sanded flat on the back side to make it more flexible to go around the curved portion of the door channel.  I added clear packing tape to the back side to reinforce it.  Below are a couple of pictures with the door closed and open.

An inspiration

While I am probably a year or two away still from the Gilman VT paper mill, your doors are an inspiration to try to do similar with the overhead doors they had.  I'll need to pick out the right materials to do mine in N scale, but your use of channels shows me the way to approach it.

I will definitely continue to be following your work on the Palmer structure. Nice work.

now if they only

Very cool Rick,

I like those doors.  Now if they only made miniature garage door openers.  It would be interesting to find a way to make them go up and down or do you have something like that in mind?   Your posting of the gas plant walls gives me an idea for my own kitbash.  I was looking at a picture of a structure that has similar arches and this kit might be just what does the trick.  Looks like you have inspired for a few others kitbashing ideas.

Thank you, Ed

I'm glad that you found the posting helpful and hope you can use it on your railroad.

Yes, Greg - I'm planning on animating the door

I'm planning on having a way to operate the door and will be experimenting with methods - both non-electric and electric.  Right now I'm trying to get the door to operate a little smoother to reduce the torque requirements for operating so I can possibly use a servo to open and close it.  More to come...................

Sail Winch

Rick

I doubt you would get sufficient travel from a normal servo but a RC Sail Winch might be the answer. Google 'Model Sail Winch' and you will get plenty of options.

Peter - thanks

I've never heard of these servos and the look heavy duty and with long throws.  They might be just the ticket!

That would just be ridiculous cool

An automatic garage door would be sick, cool, or the cat's pajamas depending on your age.
