Not wanting to hi-jack Ken Rickman's thread, here's some news from Bowser in case you haven't seen it. I believe it's the way to go with 3D printing. Perhaps they finally have it right.

That's neat!

I've been wondering when one of the big companies would start experimenting with 3D printing.  I hope Cal-Scale will keep making steam parts, and maybe they'll make a wider range now that they have this technology.

Bowser & new tech

I'm hoping too. As you can see with the antenna supports on the caboose.

Alex try this link. It goes directly to Bowsers home page. http://www.bowser-trains.com/index.html

If that doesn't work then Google "Bowser Trains" and go from there.

No go Bernd.

But I can log on to http://www.bowserorders.com/

Not even their link on that site gets through.

It's weird, I'm an old IT guy & this has me worried that I'm getting too old!

No go huh? It shows some samples. One being an antenna support for a Pennsy caboose. They also show some green translucent parts on a sprue that looks just like a plastic injection molding.

More info about Bowser 3D printing

I was curious as to what 3D Systems "Micro SLA" printer looked like. So a quick Google brought up this site.

Plus I was interested in the green material being used, 3DS’ new VisiJet® FTX Green material.

Apparently it's a plastic that can be burned out of the mold. Amazing! The jewelry and dental industry is driving this media. I say watch for some new and better casting details from Bowser.

This is exciting!

I thrill at seeing these advances in 3D printing. What with Shapeways, Bowser and the likelihood that 3D will be in reach for many of us on our own work benches, the future is bright. What kid would not enjoy designing something on a laptop, then printing it out for their layout? Whodathunk 20 years ago that laser cutters would be affordable and accessible as well.

I wonder what version of 3D Printer...

...Bowswer is using. There are some units this company offers, true, one is $5000, but  for those who will already spend $2000-$3000 for a laser cutting machine, spending $5000 for that kind of unit could be possible.

I wonder what version of 3D Printer...

I'm going to say the Projet® 1200 since it's the only one that the green ftx material is designed for.

This printer integrates 3D Systems’ VisiJet® FTX Green material – a durable and rigid material that is tailored for plastic prototyping and casting patterns making it ideal for jewelers, dental labs, and designers of very small detail products such as collectibles and electronic component parts.

Here's a neat video. Just imagine going out and scanning a real engine or piece of rolling stock, going home and printing it out. Or the detail part of an engine, scaling it to your scale and printing it out.

Sorry about the two images. I think something was mentioned a while ago why this happens.
