Hi all.

Now that I am back from a 15 day vacation break, I had time to think about where I am going with my hobby.

I need to step back, and think what are my tastes.. I mean, I love french trains, but the US diesels are always on my mind.. so, I'm going to make so changes to the layout I am building at the moment.

I want a small shunting shelf layout, something like the Bristish usually do.

I don't have a lot of space, but I think I can manage 250 x 40 cm, with no problem at all.

I have been looking at Roger Nicholls "Glendale", and I know that this is way I want to go.

rackplan.jpg this is the Track plan.  I think it has a great felling.

The layout has the thing I want, but I don't to copy it. It's size is 9 foot by 1 1/2 foot

I'm always having trouble designing layouts. Searched in Carendt.com, searched Google, searched in MRH Trackplan Database...

Who can help me? Thank yo so much for the time you spent reading this.

Best wishes.

Era & equipment?

Luis,

Do you want to stick with the Glendale's 40' cars and 4 axle locomotives?  If so, it shouldn't be too hard to reduce the plan slightly.  Shorten the runaround track by 12"/30cm, and make some of the structures low-relief flats to narrow the width 2"/5cm

Just make sure to leave room for 1 locomotive and one car on either end of the runaround track.  While it could still be worked with room for only one car/loco, that would make things a lot more challenging, and I think you've got enough room that you don't need to be that restrictive.  You don't really need to be able to run around many cars at a time, so a shorter track shouldn't be much of an issue.

Hi ken. Well, I don't think I

Hi ken.

Well, I don't think I want to stick to a specific era, however, almost all the stuff I have is form the 70's. I like small diesels like the GP38, the GP60, GP35, RS-2, or the big ones like the SD40-2. The cars I have now are 50' box cars.

Some of the models I have. I have more, enough to make some shunting on a small layout. These are the models I intend to use.

I also saw some layouts with some water in them.. I find that really nice!

Thank you.

Ok, I have been thik a lot

Ok, I have been thik a lot about this, and after reading Lance Minheim's article on May 2013 MRH, I decided to make things ever more simple, and go with the Idustrial Switching Layout, with very few turnouts.

There won't be a runaround. To have a runaround that is long enough to be useful , I think I need more space. The cars must be sorted out on the main and then pushed into the spurs.

Now I need to place this on a trackplan...

@ Luis, I have to throw a teaser at you.

Take a look through the some 70 pages of this shelf build.  To me it is incredible!  It seems to be more about the local than the railroad.  Let me know what you think about this one.  While your jaw is dropping at the photos, study the track plan.

By the way I have posted this link in the forums before.

Den, Oh My God!.

Superb scenery, Track plan is a bit too dense for me, but modelling...

Fantastic! Thanks for sharing!

A run around siding doesn't have to take up more space than a yard without one. The big advantage of a run around on a shelf layout is it lets one have industries at both ends of the layout and switch them from the same on scene train or cut of staged cars. Depending on the prototype this may or may not be more realistic but in modeling terms it's usually more interesting..DaveB

Ok, I have been taking some

Ok, I have been taking some notes about the space I have. I can make a 30cm wide shelf, in a "L" shape, with 270 x 130cm.

I think I can make something out of this....

This is what I came up

This is what I came up with.

A bit based on Palmetto Industrial from Lance Mindheim.

What do you think?

Hi all. Sent the track plan

Hi all.

Sent the track plan to Lance Mindheim, and he said that the track plan is good.

I am trying to find a way of having CN and SP on the layout, and through wikipedia, I found out that both companies went to New Orleans. I was thinking on "placing" the layout there, because, that way, I can also make and harbour, if the layout expands.

What is your opinion?

Thank you for your help.
