The thread about ALPS printers got me thinking about custom decals.  So here's a question for you guys.  What is the most cost effective way to get custom decals for a model project?

For one car/loco?

For 10 cars?

For 100?

At what point does it make sense to put together a custom order from MicroScale or other "traditional" decal manufacturer?  At what point does it make sense to invest in your own decal printing ability?

Specifically, I am thinking of white or yellow decals - the ones you can't realistically print on a home printer.  For my purposes, I am assuming HO scale, as I'm sure the larger scales have slightly different break-even points.  I need enough decals for maybe 10-15 locomotives, and probably about the same number of cars - maybe less.

"For 100?" Maybe

Seems like you would have to print an awful lot of decals to justify owning the equipment.

My first Google hit Bedlam Creations offers APLS printed decals $39 for 8" x 13" + $30 setup. If you are ordering multiple copies of the same sheet and therefore not repeatedly paying the setup fee then the cost isn't too bad. You can get a lot of decals into a 8" x 13" space.

Well what you do is

get some white decal paper and print black around your image.  I did a pair of locos like that recently and it came out fine.  Just print 3 or more of each decal you need as some are going to get spoiled in the process.

Another way I did it once was for some black on yellow decals.  Instead of the normal way, I printed black decals and made a stencil for the yellow.  I painted the yellow thru the stencil, then put the black decals on.  That worked fine too.

Pay someone else to print your file

Ken,

I just went through this.  You can fit a large number of decals on an 8 X 13 sheet.  I have used word and illustrator to set the file up and then sent them to a buddy for ALPS printing.  I printed test examples on paper and spent time fitting them to locos and cabooses. I made lots of adjustments to type size and letter spacing before they went to to print.  I think some outfits will skip the set up charge if you provide a camera ready file....

After receiving the decals, getting them to settle down on wood sided models is another discussion.......

Hi DK,

If you only need a few decals, you can email me at:

I don't run a decal business.  I just try to help out fellow model railroaders.

@ Bruce

Good email address to have.  I have a shortline discussion going on about the Morenci Southern Railway.  It only had 7 steam engines and one passenger car. The rest was ore cars and flats.  If I read right there were only 12 or 15 ore cars.  I haven't found a count of flats yet.  I doubt anybody is making decals of that shortline.

Thanks!

Have you seen photos of the lettering scheme? You might just be able to use generic numbers and letters if it wasn't too complicated.  For more involved lettering schemes Rail Graphics can make custom road names and heralds and supply generic car data sheets to go along with them...DaveB

..

i cannot recommend Rail Graphics enough.  They printed the decals for SASME years ago, they are a first class operation and they print a high quality product.  We needed some new prints and they still had our artwork on file from the first run years and years ago.

Got this from Bill Brillinger

Bill responded to my question with the following information, which I feel ought to be made public:

Quote:

The art costs what the art costs. Usually an hourly rate to set it up.
Anytime somebody suggests they will make their own art, I usually have to redo it because it's not suitable for the alps. If somebody already knows how to draw and can follow instructions, then it usually works out, but don't think that setting it up in MS word is gong to do it

Costs:

    $25 per 8x10 colour page.
    $35 per 8x10 white page.
Add $20 for double white per sheet (heavier white for dark surfaces or un-weathered models)
Add $5 to $10 per sheet for additional alps or oki colours depending on coverage

For art, every artist works at a different pace. My $60 per hour takes into account that I have been doing HO Scale art for 25 years and I'm quite fast at it. Many jobs only require $15 to $40 to setup the art for.

I like supporting other MRH users and fellow modelers when I can, so that's a point in his favor in my opinion.
