I've seen many turntables on layouts where there wasn't enough space in a given area to include a section of track off the turntable so they put in a small piece, say 3-6" long. I think the thought is if you've got a 6" piece of track you could stick a caboose on it or something.

Is there any basis in real railroading for this or just is it just "I can fit another piece of track in"?

I've got a few small GEs and was thinking those small tracks could fit those engines, even the 3" could hold a 25 tonner. But is it plausible? My homeroad is proto-freelanced on a real railroad. Thanks.

Charles, I can not recall

Charles,

I can not recall such a situation, maybe others can bring in tons of photos to confirm such a proto situation.

But remember it is your layout and if you feel the need to add several 6" track for several 25 ton GEs ... feel free to do it.

Just my humble thoughts.

Wheel Storage

Hi Charles,

You could store trucks/wheels/axles on the short track.

Or, snowplow, weed sprayer/burner or MOW bunkhouse.

It would be a great place to showcase a detailed item.

Put an overhead crane out there too.

Got to have someway to lift those axles and heavy items in a yard onto a flat or MOW car.

over run track

When a steam engine enters a turntable there is normally a short section of track on the opposite side in case the engine overruns the end of the turntable.

This happened a lot when a turntable was installed when the older steam engines where shorter. As the railroad purchased larger and longer engines, the chance that the engines front pilot would run off the end was greater.
