I have noticed today that when reading threads from the recent posts, the new replies counter automatically marks the posting as read so when you return to the recent posts menu ( I use the back button or {backspace} ) that thread no longer shows new replies counter. Great improvement. I often loose track in the recent posts wondering if I read that one or not. Anyone else notice this great new feature?

Not My Imagination

Hmmm, so it's not my imagination!

I noticed this too, but then thought it's probably just my sometimes faulty memory as to how the site used to behave.

Maybe we are both crazy.

Maybe we are both crazy. Nobody else mentioned it, and its been on all day. Perhaps we can qualify for some sort of crazy person disability pension. (Although spending this much money on toy trains at this age should automatically qualify)

Probably many are like me

and never would notice that change.  I always just hit Recent Posts again to go back to the main screen and every thing is marked as read as it should be and always has.

I saw it

I just thought, good, one of the updates. I saw it and it was good. I didn't feel a need to comment

The Improvement

After reading a comment, then returning to the main page, the Replies column is automatically updated to reflect that there are no longer new posts for that thread.  Formerly, one had to press the Recent Posts button to refresh this information.

Small, but nice change.

Bill, I guess it all depends

Bill, I guess it all depends on your forum reading method. Myself, I start with the recent posts menu option. You get a whole page full of listings. Each thread shows the number of new replies. Once you have read the post, instead of hitting the recent post button, it's easier to use the back button in your browser (or backspace key) to return to the recent posts listing, however the post you just read would still show new replies. Many times when there are lots of unread postings, it's easy to lose track of where you are on the list.  If you click on one that you already read, it takes you to the top of the current page of the posting. By then you know you've already read it. The new change allows you to use either the back button or backspace key with out having to scroll your screen to the top to SEE the recent postings button, so that you can reload it to the current updated state. I find it just makes it easier to navigate to read all the new posts. Does that make any sense?

(or should I just try to apply for the disability pension)

ok, I get it.

I have a bit different method of using the recent posts page.

I open each topic in a new tab, closing each as I go, so when I am done reading the posts I am interested in, I just reload the recent posts tab to see what's new.

I do see the behavior you are talking about. I agree. Nice update.

Glad you like it ... there's more coming

There's more coming ... the ability to use the editor on tablets and smartphones is coming soon. A few of you are testing it now. This is really the prelude to the major upgrade coming later. The first step to upgrade is to clean up the current version and make sure everything is up-to-date and properly configured.

Then the big upgrade will be cleaner ... so for the short-term, we get a lot of little minor improvements prior to be big move.

Ah, yes, noticed it this am ...

In this version, only a "Recent Posts" action would clear the "new" or "n New" items - I needed to do a page refresh to clear those I had already viewed. This is the action I noticed was missing before Drupal V6 was implemented. Nice work, staff (probably just Joe)!

Wow! I sure am happy I registered on this site in 2010 - it is so exciting and informative. Great crew, great friends, great ideas.
