This afternoon, I invited a bunch of good friends, Andrew, Scott, Ken, Julian as well as Margot and Patty over to help install the layout in the basement. I wasn't quite as ready as I'd hoped to be, but with so many helpers, we managed to get it installed all the same. When we finished, we toasted ourselves with a little prosecco, and enjoyed a great barbeque. IMG_0896.JPG I am super-happy with how it looks in its place. The height of the layout and relative spaciousness of the upper cabinets is even greater than I had hoped. The amount of light, and the backdrop look great. Thanks for all your help, Andrew, Scott, Ken and Julian!

Congrats, René!

That does look great - and I really like the height. It'll put your fine work up close where people can really appreciate the details and it'll give one a sense of being trackside.

Will the height cause you any troubles working on the layout?

I look forward to reading more - so keep posting!

Thanks for the kind words, Trevor,

The height is a bit of a compromise.  If I had been completely free, I would have built four or five inches lower.  At 60.5", I have to hike my arms up to reach into the scene.  That's fine for operating, I think, but for working on the layout, I will likely use a stool most of the time.

However, the space (not just the room!) is also serving as an office, work bench, and storage.  I wanted sufficient clearance over the desks so that I wouldn't hit my head each time I stood up.  Initial tests last night show that it will be no worse than our dining room.

The other influencing factor was the window sill height, which is even with the top of the foundation.  By placing the staging yard on the window sill, I gain about a foot of width in the room.  That's important as the room is also a playroom for the kids as well as a guest bedroom.  Another way to look at it is I gain a staging yard by placing it on the window sill (we will never know which is the truth!).

Cheers,

Rene

Case of beer

I don't think you have anything to worry about, Marc.  There's lots more to do!

Thanks!

Upper cabinets

Hi Fiddler66,

Thanks.  You can find out more about the upper cabinets here: http://pembroke87.wordpress.com/2014/03/13/top-cabinets-finished/.  They are a bit higher than I might have liked mostly because the layout is higher than I might have liked, and I needed a minimum of space above the layout so I could work on it.

They are great for storage, although I confess I only put light things in them.  One contains a telescope and tripods, two are full of sleeping bags and other camping equipment.  Two are still empty (shhh, don't tell!), and one contains all the wires and stuff for the layout.
