I'm having trouble typing on this website now.

About a month ago we got new computers, thanks to microsoft,  here at work (Windows 7)  Ever since, when I'm typing a post, especially a long sentence, the cursor will bounce back and start typing over what I had already typed.  I'm still having to type one fingered.  It doesn't always happen, but it never used to happen.  Also it doesn't happen when I'm typing emails or in any other program.  It also doesn't happen when I'm typing in MRH on my home computer (XP Pro).  The only time it happens is when I'm typing into MRH on my work computer.  And only started after we got these new computers.  I'm not very computer literate, so don't get too technical,  but is there something I need to check or change.

n at work-- whe

See it just happened.  The cursor bounced back and put the "n" from "when" several words back and wiped out the first part of the sentence.  And it wasn't a long sentence.

Thank you

Try using a different Browser like Chrome or Firefox.........

..........as MRH forums do not play well with Internet Explorer.  See this thread:

http://model-railroad-hobbyist.com/node/18378

It talks in the beginning about different browsers and problems.

Browser

Yes, definitely go with a different browser. With Firefox, it is easy to import Favorites into Bookmarks.

You have to remember, failure is not an option. It come bundled with Windows. Found that out many years ago.

Let your PC uses IE for updates and you will be ok. I know many who do that. Chrome is suppose to be good also.

Have Experienced the Same Problem

Admittedly, I prefer IE for a browser, and have experienced the same problem, along with some other random character drops.  It gets frustrating at times.  I have more problems with my work computer and rarely experience it on my home machine.  Both are running Windows 7 with IE11.  Maybe that is a hint that I should be working at work and not typing on the MRH forums!?

I have noticed that the wholesale deletion of sentences occurs most often when a hyphen is in the sentence, just like the example in the OP.  Must be some kind of character code for the editor.

Switching to Firefox is a possibility, my wife has been using it without any problems for a while now.  I have experienced problems with Chrome and Windows not playing nicely together, so I don't recommend that.  Your results may vary.

I think using a different

I think using a different browser is not the solution, it's just a fix. They should fix the real problem which lies in the software that runs this forum. I'm a member in several other forums and MRH is the only one that has this issue.

Windows in Compatibility Mode

Upper right. Click on the icon the looks like a gear. Click on "Compatibility View settings". A window will open up with the websites URL in a small window. Click add and then close the window. You shouldn't have any problems after that.

I'm running Windows  7 Professional with Explorer11 and have now problems.

Ok Joe, I know the checks in the mail, right?

Thank you all

I will try all the above when I get to work tomorrow.  i had switched over to Firefox about 2 years ago on my old work computer because IE started running sooooo slow.  I use Chrome here at home following my son's recommendation - so far no problems, but I have only been using it a couple of weeks  IE on the new work computer is doing fine except when I was on MRH.

AlanR -     I had noticed that it happened more often when I used a hyphen in a sentence, but never thought that had anything to do with the problem.  I thought it was because my sentences were too long.  Caught by the sentence cops.

Also I expected someone to tell me that I should be working when at work.  I was trying to headoff that with the sentence that exploded in my OP.

Michael -   good suggestion.  The root problems should always be fixed rather than a bandaid put over them.

Thanks to all of you for helping me with this.

Agree with Michael ...

... as this "problem" seems to only be associated with this site, the proper fix would be to correct the site rather than have everyone use a particular browser as a "work around".  I've seen that suggestion tossed out in these forums too often ... and then the root cause of the problem never gets addressed nor fixed.

While I have not ever experienced the problem described by the OP, I have (and still do) experience a similarly frustrating text entry problem ... occasionally when I use the back arrow (to correct the last typed character), the cursor moves to the end of the previous paragraph deleting the hard return (and continues to delete characters to the left from there).  I use Google Chrome on an XP box and have never noticed this type of behavior on any other web page that I have ever visited.

Compalibity

MRH and Trains.com site are two sites I have seen with Compatibility Issues when using IE. There may be more.

Google IE Compatibility Issues. IE use to work out of the box for many years until recently.

Joe - send the check to Bernd

The compatibility mode setting - well, it seems to have solved the problem.  No bounce back, typing is faster, no dropped characters and I didn't have to re-type this sentence for the hyphens.

Thanks, Bernd!  Joe owes you one!

Hey, no problem. Love to help out.

As far as the check is concerned, well, I won't hold my breath.

IE

The problem with IE and Safari is that they are really built as an afterthought. They are not their parent company's bread and butter. IE does not like php, and Safari does not like java or flash.

Compatibility mode

Since it seemed like the simpliest I am trying the compatibility mode thing first.  I remember having to do this a couple of weeks ago while logging onto the MO Unemployment website to file some returns.  I wasn't given a choice, the website just said I had to add the compatibility mode if I wanted to use the site.  Basically add or leave.

Thanks Bernd - maybe Joe will send you the August magazine free.

Well I was able to type this with no problems.  YEA

I am trying IE with Win 8.1..........

and so far it works fine.

It let me add a paragraph with the enter key.

And jump all the way down here.

Seems much better that before.

Over Type?

I had this problem in Chrome a few weeks ago and found that it stopped if I hit the "Insert" key and repositioned the cursor.

I cannot offer any real explanation as to why that solved it. I know the "Insert" key in Microsoft Office toggles the over type feature on and off. I wonder if the text editor here has a similar feature?
