Which version do you play? Or, do you play at all. "Railroad Tycoon" introduced me to the concept of progression of raw materials to basic materials and then to finished goods.

I still play the original D.O.S. version which was released in 1990. I use "DOSBox" to play on my Windows 7 computer. The newer, updated versions, and I have them all, just don't have the magic of the original.

RT3 and Trainmaster

I played the original DOS version when it first came out (may still have the disks somewhere), and now I play Railroad Tycoon 3, or the updated version, Trainmaster.  I did not especially care for RT2, nor for Railroads!

If you enjoy Railroad Tycoon, I suggest you look at Transport Tycoon, or the open source version, Open Transport Tycoon Deluxe

Now that brings back memories......

I plaid the original DOS version for years. Then there was RR Tycoon Deluxe which was a little more expanded and would run under Win 95. I still have a copy of it somewhere but haven't played in ages. I bought and hated RR Tycoon 2 as I felt it had lost its way form being about railroads and more about gaming and transport.

I've never tried RR Tycoon 3.  Is it any good? Does it go back tot he original's concepts with better graphics?

Thanks for the update

I enjoy RR Tycoon 3, especially the economics and movement-of-goods dimensions. I vaguely remember playing earlier versions, but not enough to appreciate them now. I went to a fair amount of trouble last year cleaning up an older PC and installing XP in order to continue playing RR Tycoon 3.

I also enjoy Railroads!, but it's really a completely different experience. I was frustrated at first that it didn't really continue the trajectory of the earlier versions, but I eventually adjusted to the different approaches.

I didn't know about Transport Tycoon and will check it out. Thanks!

Am I

the only one that does enjoy RT2?  I just re-loaded all of them back on my Win8 machine a few months ago.  I've played through the scenarios of RT1 and am working on RT2.  I don't get much play time, though, so it will likely be a while before I finish 2 and then move on to 3.

gaming

I play and enjoy the newer re release of railroad tycoon. Not sure what version. But I also ply locomotion. Its an older Chris sawyer game. And of course I play trainz. I have UTC and 2009 as well as my first trainz. My 2009 quit running well after the last update because my slow processor can't keep up with the game. I may have to reinstall when I get internet back at the house and do it without the update. I enjoy all these games. My kids and grandkids play rollercoaster tycoon 3. can't get them to play with real trains though.

Yes

I do play railroad tycoon, though not as much now as I used to. I started with RR Tycoon 2 on Linux and played it for hours and hours. Now my kids are playing it and having a good time with it. I am like you and the game really opened my eyes to the business of railroading and definitely what got me interested in the operational aspects.

Addiction

Hi Ken,

For a couple of years, it was the only railroad I built.

I still prefer the DOS version, better rules about laying track.

The graphics are wonderful in the new versions....but they will create impossible track to compete with your station.

Glad to hear it

I'm glad to hear that I/m not the only one that still plays computer RR games. Yes I play locomotion as well. I like the weather simulation. I find train simulator boring. Cities in motion and most RR Tycoon games can be found on Steam.

one of the great commodities that railroads moved was milk. it was moved from farm to creameries in the cities for distribution. Before that the only way to get milk was to live near a farm or own a cow.

I have all three versions,

I have all three versions, but Railroad Tycoon 3 has the best graphis by far. I haven't played it in a while, but the challenges seem to be mor einteresting.

Original version

I had the original version on my Amiga. I believe it was developed first for the Amiga, then moved to other platforms such as MS/DOS. Then the short sighted management of Commodore killed the Amiga and the PC began to reign supreme in the land of personal computers. I so have RR Tycoon II for windoze but I haven't played it in years.

A Train anyone

It came out in the early 1990's. You have to cheat to keep from being taxed to death. only one train from the  long list of trains was profitable to run.

I planed most of them

I installed RT3 on my Win7 machine, but it crashes the computer, so I don't play it anymore (anyone know how to fix this?).
