Perhaps ...

... these 503s are due to an unusually high number of current online users (last look was 784).

this is a database driven site, and if there are mysql connections stuck open, the count as a concurent connection. Stopping mysql will take the site offline for a few seconds and will kill all open connections briefly.

Are you quite sure it is MySQL that is being used, rather than some other RDBMS? A 503 error is generally interpreted as a temporary resource not available error and I would interpret that to be any resource, not just the database management software.

It isn't just 503s

Even when I do get the threads on Cleveland, I get a large number of Red 'x's instead of photos.  Now it is approaching 50%

After doing the research ...

After doing the research, looks like our little users online counter was the source of the trouble - it's a piece of custom code, and it appears it's badly in need of an overhaul to make it better behaved.

So for now this counter has been turned off - and things seem to be back to normal. Please let us know if the 503 errors have been reduced/eliminated. So far in our testing, it's much better now.

As for James and his comment about the images not all showing, we find a page refresh often does the trick - it in effect forces the browser to load up the missing images and keeps the ones that did make it in the first pass.

Turns out the problem was easy to fix. We've made the corrections and re-enabled the visitors counter. The 503 errors are gone.
