Hey guys!

I can't seem to find a lot of info about motor conversions....

My question is.

What size are the shafts on the athearn hex flywheels, for the life of me i cant find any info on the size, not even on athearns site. The motor i have is a Kato HM5 so that has a 2mm shaft.

Thanks
Nick.

NWSL?

Dear Nick, Is the North West ShortLine catalog of any help? http://www.nwsl.com Happy Modelling, Aim to Improve, Prof Klyzlr

Prof.

hello again Prof Klyzlr.

Yes that helps, but i was mainly looking for Athearn shaft sizes, so if in the future i purchase an Athean rtr loco, i can convert the motor to either a Kato or Mashima as the motors that are in the stock Athean rtr i don't particularly like.

As both Kato and Mashima motors have 2mm shaft sizes.
Regards
Nick.

datamining ath shaft details...

Dear Nick, I'm intrigued, the Horizon Hobbies-era Athearn "RTR" locos with hex-drives are equipped with mashima motors ex-factory IIRC, at least my fleet of HH-era Ath DCC-ready SW1500s were? (Earlier-era "RTR"/BlueBox locos, even the latest ones like the steel handrailed SW1500 had gold-side semi-can motors and plastic uni/sleeve drives) Given that NWSL do "ath regear/reshaft/resocket/flywheel" kits, last time I checked they had reference data for the shaft sizes in their catalog? (Data is available, just gotta datamine for it... ). Alternatively, ProtoPowerWest/A-line may have some relevant data available? (Again, being sources of Ath re-mech kits and components) Happy Modelling, Aim to Improve, Prof Klyzlr

Nick,

I have found this tool useful.

Kato & Athearn Hex motors

The hex-shaped heads on the Athearn driveshafts are the same dimensions as the ones Kato uses. If you're re-motoring a hex-drive Athearn with a Kato motor, it's better to just get the Kato motor with flywheels already installed. They can be ordered direct from Kato (search for part # 956030 or 956010), or from online shops like Ulrich Hobbies.

I've remotored a couple of Athearn BB/RTR locos using Kato motors with Kato flywheels and Athearn hex shafts. It's a relatively easy conversion.

Here's some more information about Kato motors and flywheels.

Motor shafts

Hi Nick,

I measured my Athearn Genesys gp38-2 and the motor shafts are 2.01mm

Hope this helps

Athearn shaft diameters

Hey Nick,

The shafts on the RTR Athearn with hex flywheels is 1/8", not 2.0 MM. That would be the same size as the old BB motors. The Genesis are indeed 2.0 MM. The Genesis flywheels are smaller than the RTR and have channels cut in the ends around the hex. Check with A-line as to what size they have for sale.

Good Luck! Mike
