I'm going to be posting only photos from what was formerly known as the Contest Room, as well as a setup of locomotives and cars that Jerry Krueger had in another room.

Photos coming in the comments.

I have to go pack now, and then go to bed. I'll try and upload more in the morning.

Photos VII - start of Day 4

Back into the Celebration Room to find it rather busier than the prior two days - it's full of judges. It also has even more models than it did previously...

The below model requires a bit of explanation - it is an N scale E44 electric. This model was created using Shapeways 3D printing and mounted on an Atlas C628 chassis and trucks. It has a Digitrax decoder as well -

The problem with the Celebration Room

...since this is all judged stuff, there are no names on them. I do hope that I recruited Doug Nagel, and I did talk to a couple of other people as well.

But without the names (something we'll fix/work around in Portland) it's hard to recruit.

You didn't think I was finished, did you? By my count, I've got another 71 photos of excellent (and occasionally odd) modeling for you.

We'll start with one of the odd ones - it was in the "Thumbs" category:

This structure was not in the contest - it was simply there for viewing as part of the Model Showcase. As an info sheet with it explained, after working on it for 3 years, it still wasn't complete or ready for the contest - mg_4892r.jpg

Oh, it's so nice to be home with internet bandwidth that is mine, all mine! (well, okay, my wife is surfing Facebook on her laptop...)

I finally found something that explained what the Thumbs category is -

mg_4934r.jpg

I think this one was in Thumbs too - note the dissimilar couplers -

mg_4916r.jpg

Models weren't the only things on display - there was artwork (and a lot of photos that I didn't take pictures of, although many should be in "Yes, it's a model...") as well -

mg_4917r.jpg

You've seen the below in other threads -

_4921r_0.jpg

mg_4927r.jpg

Remember the live steam 7.5" locomotive? It ended up taking the Gold Award (I think that's Best in Show) as well as the People's Choice award. They also made room for it to be displayed at the National Train Show. It burns actual coal....mg_4928r.jpg

mg_4930r.jpg

mg_4931r.jpg

I think it was decided that this little guy (and it was tiny - smaller than my thumb from the last joint to the end) was scenery, since it was unpowered -mg_4942r.jpg

mg_4946r.jpg

There were several crews of judges working the show. I don't know that I got them all, but I did try -

WOW

Lots of great inspiration and much appreciation for all the photos Jeff.

One question though if you or someone else happens to know. The really large structure model that looked like it was a waterfront model and was only for display as it wasn't finished.....what is it a model of? I could only read about a 1/3rd of the sign.

Jerry Krueger's models

I'm not sure if this was supposed to be an RPM-like "bring 'em and show 'em off" display, but the sign on the said to come in and take a look.

So I did.

And then I got out my camera.

Jerry, by the way, was the co-chairman of the 2014 Convention.

Let's not get into any discussions on the pros and cons of modeling graffiti, and just appreciate the accuracy of the reproductions.

Okay - that's it for the Celebration Room and Jerry's models. It's not nearly all of the photos I've got though, so keep checking the Recent Posts for updates.

No Names in the Contest Room

Jeff - Not sure how you'll fix or work around the 'no names' in the contest room issue in Portland.  None of the contest entry forms shown with the models have the persons name on it.  This is done to avoid prejudicing the judges.  Judging is then blind - some might say in more ways then one.  I'm not that concerned with judging and contest entry which is why I had my models in the Modeler's Showcase room.  Jerry Krueger

Modelers Showcase == Good Idea

There were a LOT of fantastic models in the judged contest, however I think the inclusion of the Modelers Showcase was a fantastic idea.  It attempts (my opinion here) to capture some of the energy that is present in the RPM meets I have visited.  Judging is a great way to get unbiased and constructive criticism that will help you improve your modeling.  The showcase is great for (and as Jerry mentioned above) simply displaying your handiwork.

I hope additional effort goes into the latter in the future; the marketing wording needs to be careful here though.  Some of the descriptions of the showcase that I saw before the convention had just a bit of "second tier" tone to them.  NOTE: I do not think this was intentional!  A nice addition to the modelers showcase (or even the judged models) might be a timeslot in which the modelers will be available to discuss their models/

I had one model in the judged contest - and came home with a first in category (kit build caboose).  That kit is now being put out to pasture (as required by rule) and will be used in stud service for other unbuilt models (i.e. - inspiration...)
