What would you call a model railroad that depicts, or tries to, the B&O/Chessie Western Division, Cincinnati Subdivision, and the Penn Central Southwest Division, particularly the 26 miles from just West of Cincinnati to Aurora, Indiana along the Ohio River?

No joke names poking fun at Penn Central either, I know you were thinking about it!

The tracks of these two railroads ran parallel to one another for much of this area.  If I were just modeling one or the other it would be either the B&O Cincinnati Sub or the PC SW Division, but it is both and just stringing them together seems a little cumbersome.

Any ideas?

Cincinnati and Western, Ohio

Cincinnati and Western, Ohio and Western, Ohio River Belt Line, Ohio River and Western, Cincinnati Belt Line, Mid West Connecting, Industrial Ohioan, Mid Western, Cincinnati and St. Louis, hows that for a few. I know it did not get to St Louis but names are full of places that the lines never got to.

It's just a name, right...?

Uhmmm...How about "Pennssie System."  I can't put my finger on that, but it sounds familiar.  Has a nice ring to it though don't ya' think?

Thanks, good suggestions

Thanks for the suggestions.  I'm trying to depict the prototype tracks as closely as possible, so I'd like something that conveys what is being modeled. I don't want to use a name that makes it sound like a fictional railroad.  PC and Chessie Cincinnati West is one I had thought about.

I like Bill's suggestion

I like Bill's suggestion coupled with your thought, though I inverted the roads.  It seems to roll off the tongue a bit smoother that way - at least to me anyway.

Does the modeled  location have a name?  I'd just call the layout whatever the prototype railroads called it , or use the name of the town if it is more suitable?

Please don't take this as

Please don't take this as criticism, I am just wondering, because as I read the forum posts, I see this type of naming train-of-thought a lot.

Why must one's layout have a name in the first place?

Then, if named, if you are depicting two real railroads (or some portion of one real RR, of part of a real RR with a fictional branch), why do you want to create a fictional corporate name?  Would not the real names of the RRs involved suffice?  It is the B&O AND PC, together in one place.

Again, I am not disparaging your desire for a name.  I just never "got it" why one would do so.  I model the DM&IR, and it has some DW&P and GN on it, but I call my layout nothing other than "the railroad".  My tag line is so y'all know what I model, not what I call it.

...hey, its 5 in the morning and I couldn't sleep! I might not be thinking clearly yet.

Name

Milt, I think Randy's just looking for something as you said, to use as a tag line or as a prefix on his blog subject lines, not as a fictional corporate name.

Randy Seiler's "Ohio River Lines"  ?

Personally, this was my favorite in the context of knowing what Randy's modeling, but if I were to see "Ohio River Lines" in a post signature, for example, I think I might still think it was referring to a freelance road, especially with "Lines" being capitalized.  I think "B&O/PC Ohio River lines" tells the story well.

Modelers name

Sure, it might be better in some contexts to add the modeler's name.  I was just thinking of keeping it shorter in order for it to serve as a prefix on blog posts subject lines without being too wordy.  Someone recommended that to me several months back as a way for people to easily identify posts.  Personally, I think the modeler's name becomes superfluous after a while, because we begin to associate one another with our works.  For example, when I hear "BNML", I automatically think of that Bill guy.

A Precedent Worth Stealing?

Bill and Wayne Reid model PRR and Western Maryland mainlines leapfrogging each other in their Cumberland Valley System. Ohio Valley System might not nail down the geography closely enough, but how about Cincinnati Southwestern System or Southwest Ohio System?

I've only been including Randy's name as a "full" version.

"PC and B&O, the Ohio River lines" certainly stands on it's own too.

HOT trains

How about:   HoosierOhio Transportation.

You could even include barge and truck freight hauling.

Or, I can see it now:  a snow plow with the "HOT" logo.

Its a creative group...

You can't deny this crowd's creativity. Some great names in here, especially for anyone contemplating a free-lance line. Thanks for all the suggestions.

I really like the Ohio River Lines moniker, but I fear that it almost sounds too much like its own railroad. I think maybe PC/B&O Cincinnati West or something along those lines may work. "PC and B&O, the Ohio River lines" sounds pretty cool to me, but I also feel a little like I'm giving the prototype a nickname that it never had.  "PC and B&O Cincinnati West" doesn't have as cool a ring to it, but is pretty descriptive of what I'm doing and doesn't have the same feeling of hanging a made-up nickname on it. I also thought about PC and B&O Southwest Ohio, but much of the layout is in SE Indiana, so that doesn't really work either. I could also go with PC and B&O Western Cincinnati.

I'm really diggin' that whole Ohio River lines thing though.

well..

you're modeling the rail lines of the Ohio river are you not?

Is there another name for the general area you are modeling?

more ideas:

  • PC and B&O; the Ohio River lines  (changed to semi colon)
  • The PC and B&O Ohio River lines
  • PC and B&O IKO   (Where Indiana, Kentucky, & Ohio meet)
  • PC and B&O - Shawnee Lookout    ??

Nah, I never call it "the 'nati" and don't know anyone that does, and I've been here my whole life. The hipsters may use that term a bit, but its not generally used. I aint callin' it the PC/B&O Nati!
