all_file.jpg This is a overhead view of an ethanol plant model that the Dakota Southeastern Division of the NMRA just finished for the American Ethanol Association. It has taken us about a year to make it, one big problem was finding all the parts. We had to make two models of Wilson grain trucks and received help from LoneStar Models with three of the fine reproduction of the Wilson grain trailer.

The display is 4 feet by 6 feet, and it will be used at trade shows.

If there is some interest in seeing more of the display I will post more photos.

I was wondering who is going

I was wondering who is going to read the sign on the upper left side of the photo with it installed like that. Nice models.

Love industrial modeling!

Is the cracked/patched concrete a printed photo?  Nice effect!  Is the model generic, or is it of a prototype installation?

Concrete, etc.

The concrete is painted on both .040 plastic and plaster. It is first painter with gray primer, then over coated with Pollyscale aged concrete. All cracks and lines are ink. When dry we over coat it with a dried light tan clay.

We used the Walthers Ethanol kits, but based it on several real ethanol plants we visited.

I have just added two new pictures with the green background replaces with a sky background.

Photo Posting Tip...

Set the width of your photos in the forum picture properties to 750px wide, then we can see the whole photos.

Cheers!

Tankcar being Loaded

We opened up a standard ethanol tank car by cutting off the cover and reattaching it in the open position.  edited-1.jpg

Great stuff.......do more

Yes the curve is probably too tight, the shared truck and employees entrance to the facility is probably wrong.  Industrial facilities usually have separate entrances/exits for trucking and employees.  I still love it. This is the type of stuff that keeps the hobby alive and vibrant.  Show us how you got to that point and show us the build up of the site and parts and techniques used.  By the way you wouldn't have a viable air separation plant layout, please oh pretty please.  One problem with the hobby is the cost of doing such things.  Cost saving tips would in doing this type of build would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

The plant we used for our model had only one entrance for trucks and employees/visitors. The curved track may be a bit tight, but the balloon track within the facility is a very small/tight radius, although I don't know what it is. If you know where an ethanol plant is located, that has a balloon track, take a look on Google Maps to see how small it is. One of the plants we visited is in Lennox, South Dakota. The Poet plant is just a little northwest of the town, and you can see the balloon track.

We hope to write an article about how we made it. Keep posted.

What is a air separation plant.

N Scale Grain Trucks

Excellent work, I envy you the patience you must have had to build such a marvelous display.  I noticed you mentioned one issue was with modeling modern grain trucks.  Cannot help you with HO scale, but there is a gentleman who does excellent 3D modeling of modern trucks and trailers in N Scale for those who are interested.

Check out https://www.shapeways.com/shops/NScaleAddict. or http://www.nscaleaddiction.blogspot.com/ His 3D work is awesome, personal experience when I purchased his UP Water Tender models.

Siding Type for Building Walls

Wes,

What did you use for the building siding?  It looks like board and batten siding available from Evergreen Plastics.
