The same day I finished the last update, I received the Grandt Lines smoke jacks in the mail. So this part we'll deal with the base roof assembly and installing the smoke jacks.

So first off I have a question as to why they are called smoke Jacks? If anyone knows out there let me know.

So first image I set the two roof halves in place and tacked them with some CY glue. The roof can be removable so I just glued the ridge together. This way you can add interior detail later and retrieve that derailed loco too.

Another view of roof.

Just having the two halves was a bit weak in my opinion so I added some bracing. Knowing my clumsy hands I could just see snapping the two halves apart.

Next image is eyeballing smoke jack location.

I figured 1 1/2 inches woulds be fine.

Next image shows smoke jack parts and one dry assembled.

I used my cordless drill with a small bit first and made starter holes then switched to a 3/16" bit to enlarge. with a little hobby knife work after that the sleeve fit.

And here's an image of rough fitting the whole smoke jack.

I then glued the smoke jack pieces together except the bottom vent and painted them a color called pavement made by Apple Barrel. It's fairly close to the plastic color but dries flat as you'll see once in the house.

In the next update I'll be covering the roof, but for now I couldn't resist some test shots on the layout. you can see how the color of the smoke jacks look in these. Enjoy.

Looks good, but.....

......(yeah there's always a but) there was a comment in an earlier segment about painting the trim board you add to straighten the paint line in the middle of the wall. I personally would paint that green. That is an excellent fix the paint bleeding problem. It is one I will remember and use when the need arises. The other point is the the place where the smoke jack meets the roof. The flashing need to conform to the shape of the roof. Otherwise water will leak into the structure and cause damage. Jim

RE: Looks good, But....

Thanks Jim,

I still haven't decided if I'm going to paint the trim pieces green yet or leave them white. Still pondering that one.

As far as the flashing, I plan on cover the roof with corrugated metal so it should help with the flashing issue when I do the ridge line. I may also mix a little of the same color paint  I used on the smoke jacks with some tacky glue and fill in around the base to make it flush.

Your plan to finish....

.....the roof sounds as if it will take care of the smoke jack flashing. As for the trim board, my preference is green, but what you have done with white is just as good. Just don't paint it puce! I look forward to seeing the finished structure. Jim
