New Year - New Layout Update #???? Finding Inspiration

kcsphil1's picture

While its good to spend time letting folks know about all the modeling we're doing, it's also good to take a break and look at how someone else has done it.   I did just that this past weekend, with a trip up the line to the N-scale NYS&A of Todd Treaster.  Todd hosts open houses through out the year, and this was the first one I had the chance to attend.

Coming in the basement door, the yard sits off to the right - and what a yard it is:

Current capacity is estimated at about 2400 cars, and I think every track was full or nearly so.

The locomotive servicing facility is equally impressive:

Interestingly, Todd runs DC - but with his collection of locomotives numbering into the 100's, I can undersatnd why.  His control panels and wiring are top-notch:

This is definitely a railfan's layout,

and the possibilities for pictures are endless.  Here's s group of miniature railfans catching the action at grade:

All in all, it was  a great drive to see a great layout, meet some great new people, and eat Mrs. Treaster's World Famous Meetball Sandwich's.

More importantly, these kinds of open houses are a great source of inspiration, and a chance to recharge the modeling batteries.  While the NYS&A isn't finished yet (this version is only 5 years old), it is done well enough that the less detailed areas do not impact the view.  That's important, and a great reminder to us all to do more modeling!

Okay...

That first photo has me feeling... inadequate.

I think I need to buy a sound decoder or something.

Jeff I don't think they have

Jeff I don't think they have invented a little blue pill for model Railroaders yet but I think I know what you mean. I clicked on the post and saw the first photo of the yard and 2400 cars and I had to catch my breath. To think what he could do with DCC.

YEah, but as it is

there were three trains runnign at the same time all day, so for DC he does alright.  talking to Todd, It's clear that hearlly just likes to railfan - not switch, and so while there are a couple of industrial areas - he's purfectly happy with letting them roll on the high iron.

And now, here's some video:

Or not, since Joe and the MRH staff think that my use of Weird Al's "Amish Paradise" as my sound track violates the copyright laws.  If you didn't see the video and would like to, message me and I'll send a link to it elsewhere.

It figures the sound track is by Weird Al.

Who picked the sound track? Why make fun of a group like the Amish? I think its counterproductive since you never know how can be turned off by the tune. I like the video but it nees a better soundtrack.

?????

Irv,

I picked the soundtrack.  Weird Al has been one of my favorite artists for over a decade.  His parodies of nearly everyone are hilarious, and I don't think he (or I) is picking on the Amish any more here then he was/is picking on me (and my scientist colleagues) with his recent hit "White and Nerdy."

Next time I'll just go with some Run DMC . . . .

Weird Al is misunderstood

Irv, Weird Al is actually not making fun of the Amish in his song, its more poking fun at the original song, Gangster's Paradise.  The lyrics, while goofy (it is Weird Al after all), actually demonstrate respect for the Amish people.  I won't get into a dissertation of music lyrics here, though.  But count me a long time fan of Weird Al.

I was not aware of the orignal song he was parodying.

They didn't sound respectful to me. But then I don't really like Weird Al. The last song I heard by him before this one was "Like a Surgeon." So call me backward. But do it with a smile.

It's worth noting, kcs ...

kcs ...

It's worth noting that using Wierd Al as part of the sound track of your video is a violation of copyright and that means your video is borderline illegal.

Sorry to be such a pain, but your video started a hot discussion among the MRH staff that ended in agreement that we should err on the side of caution with regard to copywritten content.

Long story short - we don't allow you to post content on this forum that's copywritten unless you have gotten the copyright owner's permission - so please redit your video to remove the illegal content or remove it from our forum.
