Fooling Around With Bricks

RICKTEST.jpg

I have been figuring out painting brickwork this week.  I tried the "put the paint on with a makeup sponge" method with oil paints. That turned out OK.  I then followed it up with a acrylic mortar colored wash, which was too bright. Finally I toned it down with a light gray wash. I may mess with it a bit more before moving on to the windows and trim

And while I was at it I tried to make a Common Loon for the shore of Kootenay Lake...he is about 1/8" long.

Nice!

The swamp looks great Mark! The ducks are the kind of touch that will go unnoticed by most people, but when pointed out will usually cause their jaw to drop.  I'm still trying to fathom how you made a N scale loon though.

Here's My Loon with a Train.

Admittedly, I put considerably less effort in to my loon than Mark did.  Its nesting near the river bank.  See if you can find it.

Pointing up I like that

I wonder if I have a Loon in my misc collection. Admittedly I've never been to the Frigid Northlands but that's not to say coins from there haven't made there way to me. I love the "paper" money though. Especially with hockey on it!

Empty car

After unloading two tractors last week, the empty car has to be moved away.

Old Baldwin 4-6-0 is taking care of that job.

Happy week-end to all

Hate to be a nitpicker

but don't common loons have black or dark grey bills, Mark?

Nice work, of course!

@MikeC

Not nit picking, but have you thought about using a filter to knock down some of the star shaped glare? I bet we could see more detail in your beautiful work if you did. Den

...of grey and black beaks...

http://t1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSsccrvrcSmhMEv4ug788mug0WBQNoNN9WfAfY73kWwJezTK5wITNUrH_E You know you're probably right Rene but I was using the first image that popped up on Wikipedia under Common (great northern) Loon and the beak looked light grey to me. In most of the other photos I find now the loons have black beaks. Md

I have

a pack of loonies in a drawer.  They can be quite useful around these parts for acquiring model railroad related stuff.

Yes, we trade loonies...

Reminds me of a story from my hobby shop days...

A "new" customer is in the store and my boss asks him, "what do you model?"

"Oh," he says, "I carve ducks."

to which my boss instantly replies, "do they object?"

lol.

Mike. Not only are you a superb craftsman, but also have a good eye for composition, which really creates a nice mood in your scenes. I've only shot two night scenes on my past layout that I now wish I had seen your's first in order to have shot them better in regards to ambient lighting like you did. Cheers

Thanks Rick, Den [although I quite like the star effect I might check out some filters - could be fun] and Deemiorgos yours look fine to me, especially the middle one.

Sometimes I hold a small light up close to the blue ceiling for a moonlit effect, but with the shutter open for a full 60 seconds I can't be bothered most of the time
