The PWRR 5 - Allentown Part 1

royhoffman's picture

After leaving NJ, the Eastern end of the Penn Western, we cross back over the Delaware as we head to our next destination. The PW has two main lines, one northward to Allentown and one westward to Harrisburg via the Anthracite Coal Region. Some industries represent certain towns in PA that aren't geographically correct like Gettysburg, Shippensburg, Jim Thorpe and Mifflinburg, but the structures themself exist to keep the flavor of modeling PA. We'll next be heading to Allentown. The Allentown section occupies an 8' X 17' pod with 2 liftout sections for access. Allentown will be in two parts.

Our train leaves Center City Philadelphia and crosses the Schuylkill River.

We pass a scratchbuilt feed and grain mill. The walls are made from foamcore and it's a typical design for such mills.

We're coming into Allentown. This section was expanded to its present 8' X 17' area a few years ago.

Here's a Lehigh Valley Models S scale Oil Depot. I had some converted American Flyer tank cars lettered for Mobil, so I made it a Mobil oil depot. The gray building in the background was covered in the 12/84 RMC.

A scratchbuilt model of a Walmart distibution center. I had to include Pennsylvania's largest employer. The structure is basically made of foamcore.

Another scratchbuilt structure made of foamcore with Grandt Line S scale windows and doors. It's a large furniture factory and is based on a 10/79 article in RMC.

This grain elevator has become pretty ubiquitous since it was the subject of an article in the June 1957 Model Railroader.

This concludes part one of Allentown, PA. I hope you enjoyed it. Model Railroading should be fun.

Roy,

Some great scenes again!  Thanks for sharing.

I don't suppose you would consider doing an article or forum clinic on building structures using foam core?  That would be awesome!

Thanks again!

Foamcore

I love the stuff and would be happy to share whatever experience I've had with it. There's a new kid on the block called gator board, but it seems to be much more expensive than foamcore. It's proponents say that it holds up better, but some of my foamcore structures are several years old and have yet to do any warping, etc. Do to the cost and my good luck with it, I'll stay with foamcore, but others may well prefer the gator board. The techniques should be the same in either case.

I recently bought a plastic roof at a NMRA regional convention white elephant sale for a buck with the idea of putting a building under it. I could take pictures as I go and make an article out of it for the forum. We'll see how it goes.

That would be great Roy

I'd definitely be interested in that.  Any chance you could do some of it with video?  Pictures are great, but video would really be fantastic.  Perhaps if you are going through the effort, you should contact Joe and see about an article and get paid for your efforts...

Working on the chainsaw

Awesome Roy!

I will be watching carefully.  I'll second the request for video tutorials if you can do that.  A picture is worth 1000 words but a video is worth 10,000 pictures, IMO.

Indeed you should approach Joe about an article if you have the inclination and time.  Like Dave says, it doesn't hurt to get a little compensation for ones efforts.

Looking forward to seeing what you are doing in either case.  Thanks!

Roy make some coin for yourself

Roy if you're going to go to the trouble to build a structure and make a video take step by step photos and do a write up on all the work.

STOP!!! First do a written outline of the subject and the project.

Next send it to the editor of MRH for submission to the magazine as a series of articles building with foam core and they will pay for the stuff.

Check out the link around the Top Header Photo on this page under "Write for us". Everybody needs money for their RR and MRH pays quite well for good work and from what you have shown us so far is you do some really nice work. DAN

Not Yet

Hello Michael,

I really haven't done anything yet. The Holidays and the articles I've been doing for my blog have taken much time up. I also have been in the process of providing some of the pictures from the blog to the website for the NMRA,MER,SMD at www.smdnmra.org/modeling.htm

I'll begin trying to work something up. I just downloaded Google Sketchup and will try to get up to speed with it and see if it can help me design the building that will go under the roof I have.  I appreciate your interest and the impetus that you've provided. If anyone has photos and/or suggestions for the building, feel free to let me know.
