Final details are done on the Swanson Blvd commercial park scene on my IAIS Grimes Line layout.

swanson2.jpg

swanson3.jpg

I spent the last few days making what felt like hundreds of little details, including street signs, power poles, lights, switch stands, fire hydrants, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera, ad nauseam. Every time I’d think that I was making too many “things” for such a simple scene, I’d look at prototype pictures and realize I needed more.

Up next, it’s time to meet my Waterloo as I start construction of the CB&I steel plant.

That scene is absolutely

That scene is absolutely amazing. The last photo looking down the road is so realistic. Wow. Well done James. Can't wait to see your steel plant.

I agree...

Randy. The street shot is REAL! I also love the view of the track from the air.

Sweet!Your layout has got

Sweet!Your layout has got that "look" that i'm going for on my Switching layout. It all looks Fantastic!I really like your attention to detail, and your vibe for the modern era.I also appreciate the fact that your layout in no way looks like anything else i've seen. And it looks very prototypical.

BTW,If you don't mind me

BTW,If you don't mind me askin? What size(Dimensions)is the styrene that you used to make the "street-curbs".Yours looks dead-on accurate.

Forgot to mention "Tichy

Forgot to mention "Tichy train group" now produces multiple modern street signs avaliable in just about every form you could think of,just gotta paint the backs of them "aluminum",and their very inexpensive.

Curb Dimensions

Thanks everyone for your kind comments.

I used .040 square strips for the curbs. More details are in a previous blog entry, " Curb Appeal".

Great Scene

Looks very linear and railroad-y with the long view that's possible down the street.

Very nice !

I'm curious why there is no backdrop or view block on one side? Is this a modular scene  that gets set up in different configurations? .DaveB

Ease of Access

Easy access, pure and simple. Both center-room peninsulas are open on both sides, since both peninsulas are where the major switching areas are located. In theory, at least, the conductor and engineer can be on opposite sides when working.

Excellent

Really, really nice modeling James. The detail is plentiful, yet it doesn't look busy or overdone. Another testament to looking to the prototype for guidance and inspiration and some excellent modeling. Hats off to you!

Overwhelmed

Everyone, you are too kind. Thank you.

If nothing else, I hope this shows that less can be more when it comes to a model railroad. Thanks everyone for sharing their own work on this site. You've inspired me in my own work.

Impressed +1, Inspired +many many many...

Dear James,

Can't add any superlatives beyond what's already been said, so +1 here.

Something that occurs, is it just me, (probably),
or does that 2nd pic, even with just "single track on plank" off-stage extensions for the curved LH spur, straight "mainline" at bottom centre, and curved track at top right,
look prime for a compact engaging shelf (home) or show layout?

Happy Modelling,

The Inglenook at Swanson

Absolutely Prof!

Many, many years ago when I was first becoming interested in the Grimes Line, I built a micro layout based on the track arrangement at Swanson Blvd. I was still starting out in life, so I didn't have much in the way of space... or money... or time. The layout didn't get very far, but it worked.

If you look at the plan, the PDM Spur is basically a slightly modified Inglenook. You could build the arrangement all by itself with a simple fiddle yard to the east, and have everything you'd need for an enjoyable design.

Didn't I just

Didn't I just drive down that street the other day? Really nice.  I do question the positioning of the dumpster. Dumpsters are accessed from the end for transport. Positioned the way you have it a transporter couldn't get to it.

More to the Story

Correct. Except the parking lot extends well past what I've modeled.

umpster3.jpg

A Roll-Off dumpster will often be placed in the corner stall of the Auto-Jet Muffler lot, but can be found in other spots as well. There's more than enough space for the truck to get at it for pickup and drop off. I just didn't have the space to model all of the parking lot.
