I have had my NCE powercab for a while now and have only over the last few months come into purchasing my first sound loco. The first thing is apparently you can change how to loco functions by changing the CVs...I have no clue how to come up with the Value after i put in the CV ? or even if i am putting in the correct CVs at all ?

Any help with this would be great, be kind I am new to world of programing decoders (haven't attempted it before now)

Nick.

Sound Decoder CV settings

I would strongly recommend you go to the decoder manufacturer's web site and download their instruction manual. SoundTraxx offers a comprehensive user manual and a programming manual, both available for download in PDF format. The user manual will take you through the most common adjustments to sound and lighting CV's and introduce you to the other capabilities of the system. The programming manual (I may be calling it by the wrong name, but the larger file at any rate) give you the complete list of CV's - we'll over 200 at last count, and explains how each of the positions in the CV (8 positions numbered 0 through 7 and each carrying a value of either 0 or 1) affect the operation of that variable. Download and print each of these, and "happy reading"!

Raw data vs "solving a specific problem"

Dear Nick, There are two approaches/vectors to your question. - what CVs are available, what are their values, and what does each one do? (IE the "gimme the info, and I'll work out what I need from there for myself"technique) - what task/mission/effect do you wish to achieve, and how to get there (IE the "I don't need to know everything, I just want a specific solution to a specific problem"approach) - RE "CV info for reference/DIY " Suggest starting with the list of CVs applicable to your specific Athearn loco http://www.soundtraxx.com/factory/OEM_pages/athearn/athearn.php(IE this tells you what CVs are available, and gives the human-readable name. NB that some OEM Soundtraxx decoders are cut-down in feature spec and available CVs) and back that up with the Technical Reference manual. http://www.soundtraxx.com/manuals/Tsunami%20Diesel%20Technical%20Reference_1.13.pdf - RE "I have a problem/mission/desired effect to achieve, how do I get there?" The first question has to be "so, what are you trying/wishing to achieve?" Once we know what we're aiming for, we can work out how to get there (using the above Reference information to guide us ) Happy Modelling, Aim to Improve, Prof Klyzlr

Knowledge

One of the installers who cut his teeth doing installs for MrDCC at Litchfield Station suggested I download the manuals form the decoder manufacturer, in my case, Sountraxx. I did and then began reading about the how's and whys of CVs. And it was not a laborious process. The basics are intuitive and easy to grasp. Some are more involved but still easy once you take action and observe the result. Remember, each decoder manufacturer builds in a reset CV or CVs, so oops can be corrected. It's a hobby so it should be fun.
