This is my first layout, so being that I don't have a large amount of space I'm starting small. I figure this way I'll be realizing some accomplishment with my work sooner than trying to attempt a large layout. I've decided to go with a shelf switchng layout, after searching for information on small layouts. So here are some pics on what I've done so far.

Guessing ...

... that you intend to add more track to the left of that turnout in the upper left corner ... a 'cassette' perhaps?

New

Yes I'm already thinking of cassette for short term. I had drawn my idea on paper figuring I had enough room for a short straight there but once laid out fell short. Then later as my budget allows I'll extend it another 2 feet or so.

That works ...

... any ideas about scenery yet?

Peter, you are very wise.

You have a layout that you can enjoy right away.  You won't believe how many model railroaders have been in the planning stage for months or even years with no track down.  I'm glad to see your progress and look forward to seeing more!  Thanks for your post.

I think you're going to need

I think you're going to need a runaround. It allows more switching variety as you can work spurs in both directions.

Keep it simple

You've already got a nice little switching yard there with lots of car movement opportunities already. Maybe you want to do some practive operations first before adding this or that? Just my 2 cents. Enjoy!!!

Yes ...

... without a run-around, using that siding to the lower left may prove to be 'awkward'.  Perhaps it could be used as a locomotive shed or some-such rather than a car spot?  Of course you could always fiddle the cars on the cassette to simulate an off-scene run-around; no harm in that really.

Scenery

I have a water tank kit I've already assembled for it. I do have a basic plan for structures I'll try and post soon. I based it a layoutI read about in " Small, Smart and Practical Track Plans" by Iain Rice photo CRW_7238a_zps6c5e1463.jpg photo CRW_7233a_zps21ca3f66.jpg

Run around

Not sure what a run around is. I'll have to look that up.

Run around ...

Joe Fugate (and Charlie Comstock) provide a pretty good explanation of what these are and how they work starting about 10 posts down in this thread:  https://forum.mrhmag.com/post/compact-shelf-plan-advice-12185968; where he discusses switching facing and trailing point turnouts ... lots of other tidbits that you may find useful there as well.
