Stuart Thayer, his brother Bill and nephew Pete stopped by for a visit last week. Pete was able to catch a few trains on the railroad. Here's a link to his video:

Hope you enjoy!

Love the U boats

Tom,

Great video, love the work you have done on the U boats.  They sound great, what decoder did you use?

Art- thanks for inserting the video. I still haven't figured that one out.

Joe- thanks for the kind words. It was fun to go back and look at Pete's previous video and see what had changed on the layout in the year between visits.

Ryan- thanks, the U30C's are Atlas Silver Series with Tsunami decoders and two round speakers.

Nice layout Tom. I really

Nice layout Tom. I really like the concept and execution of your layout. I viewed the track plan on line somewhere and you have a winner. I always was reminded of the V&O when looking at your plan. Nothing wrong with similarities with a proven concept. Your models both rolling stock and structures really capture the flavor and look like the belong in the area modeled. The tree covered scenery looks good as well with hillsides well depicted.

Thanks for sharing, and Art thanks for posting.

Thanks

Thanks, Rob. Allen McClelland and the V&O had a huge influence on me. I also enjoy studying just about anything associated with the coal hauling railroads of Kentucky, West Virginia and Virginia. I believe that helps a bit when trying to model the area.

In a previous post

I forgot to mention what initially attracted me to your layout was the word Wheeling. In this case Wheeling, WV. That is the area I am planning to model although a much earlier time frame than you are depicting. I meant to post on your web site but for some reason it did not want to let me leave a comment through my usual form, e-mail so I never did. Great layout I have watched your videos and layout progress pictures many times and greatly enjoy it.

For the time being...

It's about as close to getting a go on the real thing. Always good to see updates on your layout Tom, even better seeing it with video. Which reminds me, must do a video update on the JL&T. Jas...

Re: Comments

Thanks, Jas- if you're ever in my neck of the world, you have an open invitation to visit. And I'm anxious to see a video of all the work you've done on the L&T branch along with your progress on the paper mill project.

Kevin- thanks for the kind comments.

But Tom, where are the Alcos?

Tom!

Great stuff. I really enjoy seeing footage of your railroad. I always enjoy learning about other proto-freelance layouts. Creative minds think alike.

But all these whining EMDs...and no Alcos? Or maybe I just missed them. Maybe the Allagash can send you a couple on short-term lease!

Seriously though. Keep up the great work and keep sharing.

Wow!!!!

Tom,

That has to be one of the coolest videos I've ever watched of a model railroad (maybe I should say REAL railroad).  It all looks so real and believable.  Those eye level shots are amazingly realistic.  Nice job!!!

Re: Alcos

Mike- thanks for the kind words. Your comment about the Alcos made me realize that the one in service has never made it to the big screen. Here's a shot of 2759 at Hollister Yard.

Like the C&O, the CWE was primarily an EMD road in the 1960's and 1970's. The small fleet of RS-3's and handful of RSD-5's were almost all gone by the mid-1970's. Other than those units, there were only a handful of C628's on the railroad. There will be a few more of these beasts on the layout in the future, along with a C430 in PC livery that will appear on a few run-through trains. However, I like the thought of an Allagash unit showing up at some point...

By the way, I've thoroughly enjoyed each segment of your book so far. It's inspired me to go back and re-visit all of the stuff I put together on the CWE many years ago.

Greg- thanks for the kind comments. Building bridges has always been one of my favorite parts of the hobby. We're fortunate to have so many great kits and parts to kit-bash with these days.

Tom- many thanks. Pete did a great job with some of the eye level shots. I just wish the rest of us had been a little more quiet while he was filming!
