Here is a pic of my first home road cars.  P2k Gondolas modified to look more like Canadian prototypes built by National Steel Car.  I Still need to weather them, but I am happy with this first effort.  More info on my newly created Blog.

Looking great Ryan!

Nice work on the Gons, nobody would know this is a Freelance road if you didn't tell 'em.

Love the moose !

Modified Gons

We used to do the same modifications (removing the deepest part of the fishbelly side) on our P2K gons in Canadian colours on our club layout.

P2K vs Rapido gons

As Chris mentioned, we have been doing that modification on our P2K gons for years, and other than the lettering not going on quite right because of the wrong number of ribs (for a Canadian gon,) they look fine.  We just got our first bunch of the new Rapido gondolas, which are Canadian prototype and thus have the right number of ribs, and we were pleasantly surprised that our old Proto gons don't look bad at all alongside the new cars.

We will probably be keeping our Proto gons, since they have hat section ribs, unlike the Rapido cars (which feature accurate Z-braced ribs) so they represent a later prototype, and until someone makes hat-ribbed Canadian gons, they will serve just fine.

Thanks

Guys,

Thanks for the comments.  I admit I learned of the p2k modification from Hunter Hughson's website, whom says he learned about this from the Waterloo club.  This is a great pc of modeling info, so thanks for sharing.  I also just got a couple of the new Rapido Gondolas in CP colours.  These are great models.  I may add stakes to mine for pulp wood service.

Hunter's posts

For those attempting to search the web for Hunter's blog posts on "Canadianizing" the Proto2000 mill gondola, here is the link... http://ontarioinhoscale.wordpress.com/category/cp-mill-gondolas/

Along with the fishbelly modifications, paint and decal work; he also did a wonderful job on bashing and weathering which really is of interest to anyone who wishes to make their gondolas look more realistic.

Hunter who?

Woa Ryan, hold on a second.  You typo'ed my name into Hunter Harrison.  Them's fightin' words in these parts.  However, you can feel free to typo my name into Hunter Thompson any time you like.

Joking aside, your models look really good - the gons and RS10 included.  I've spent a great deal of time in the back country of Algonquin, so your layout's scenery and the moose on your logo pretty much sealed it for me... I'm looking forward to seeing more photos.

By the way, do you know of a source for HO scale moose?  I need some for the scene I'm building on the WRMRC.

My Bad

Hunter,

My apologies for spelling your name wrong.  I fixed the post. Don't know what I was thinking, I'll blame it on auto correct.....

Jurgen thanks for the Moose link.  I think I will get one for my layout.
