Three new models in my stock ...

... old time 27' drop bottom gondolas of NYO&W where the prototypes were built in 1890.
Nice models but with need of some repairs and additions.

Click my website -  http://us-modelsof1900.de/?p=7509 - to see a few background info and pictures about the prototype cars.

Nice models? No, not good enough!

What are the problems?

Brake needs a few corrections, ...

Ends are not in best condition ...

  ... and inside?

I think that I should invest a bit work to give a better look. (And then I will add a coal load!)

First step, paint is removed from all models.

To be continued.

First addition ...

Bottom hatches are closed by small chains - unfortunately finer ones are not available.
Or who knows a source?

Chains

Bernhard,

Have you looked at jewelry? I've seen some very fine chains used in jewelry.

Bernd, Jewelry is a good

Bernd,

Jewelry is a good idea but also there are silver chains not fine enough.
What I need are fine anchor chains without each gadgets. However all which I found was not better as that what I owned already. Maybe I should make a new check in gift jobs and jewelers.

Thanks!

All new brass details are

All new brass details are added, ...

... new hand brake staffs and brake wheels and brackets, retainer valve and pipe, uncoupling levers over whole car wide, removable air hoses - and I have done a lot of repairs on these very superficial soldered models.
Models have also received the new 5' archbar trucks from Tahoe Model Works. I think these are the best trucks, which you can get at the moment.

Also the brakes were reworked, so as a brake with hand brakes at both ends should be looking.

But some details have yet to be added. All outer corner irons are etched in the walls. I want to change and so I have to glue or to solder additional irons outward on the walls. And they must be fixed by bolts or rivets.
But can I solder yet on the walls - in all cases under the grab irons? I hope for an idea and the help from the sky!

First of my three gondolas

First of my three gondolas has got its corner irons.

I have built them from 0.005 styrene sheets and rivets were pressed with a simple jig.

Maybe I can write a short description about this technique in mag in next time. As a preview look my description and pictures on my website - in German.

Ready for painting! Next pictures will follow.

Nice models indeed

These are nice   I do hate to think what they weigh, though-are they heavier than other models?

You're doing some amazing upgrades  One question:  I se that, as you received them, they have brake wheels at both ends?  Is this right, or are the brake wheels on one end going to come off?

Thanks, ...

... for your interest and your friendly comments, Michael and IrishRover!

Two answers, IrishRover.

Also the car in original is equipped with hand brake wheels at each end. I have seen pictures and drawings of that car in a book about the coal business of the O&W. These both hand brakes were also part of brake system after a  rebuilding project in 1905 and later and so the models are correct built.
An addition: The mentioned book is “Hard Coal and Coal Cars” von Martin Robert Karing III.

And second, the weight of models. Weight is 73 gram, with load 92 - total 3 1/4 oz. After NMRA this model with a length of 105 mm (4 1/8") should have a weight of a little bit over 3 ounces. So these models are a little bit to heavy but I think that this is acceptable and that should not give problems in use.

o&W gondolas

HI found your article on MRH. Doing a historical O&W area railroad in S scale, who makes those gon's?  My layout will be around 1935 to 40 and is a representation of the major freight that was shipped on the O&W, Milk, Coal, Blue Stone, and Vacationers using the trains to go to the Mountains to escape summer city heat. I have chosen COOKS Falls New York for the area since it was a good example of this freight, and also the wood chemical, and dye business. Though few of the cars were being used in that time frame I thought one or two would be good to have for ash service or maintenance. I find I may have to hand build most of the rolling stock that I want because not many are not offered in S scale.

However I'm sure that these models will not be available in S-scale .
