The beginning...

Hi All,

Well this week has seen the commencement of the next phase of building on the JL&T.  The new Paper Mill Complex has officially begun and is well under way.

As most of you would know the Intermodal Terminal has been scraped and the area is being converted into a Paper Mill Complex.  This week marked the first step towards this new build, with the arrival of the main structure kits for this from MB Klein in the USA.

IMG_3242.jpg

Over the last couple of nights I have been building the shells for the kits and tonight the last one was finished.  The kit shells are now sitting on the layout and over the weekend I will be test fitting the structures to ensure they all fit, are in the right place in as so far as the processes for the mill go, and see what changes to the existing track work need to be made.

From left to right:

The pulpwood unloading area & unloading crane,  Recovery/Boiler House, Bleaching & Additive Building, Pulp Storage Tanks, Kraft Mill & Paper Mill.

IMG_3243.JPG

There will be a few more smaller buildings/sheds added, lots more detailing including storage tanks, pipe work, equipment, along with scratch building & kitbashing to try and make this complex like the real deal.

IMG_3244.jpg

The Paper Mill above already requires some kitbashing/scratch building as the rail served loading dock is on the wrong side, this will be added to the left side and will cover the existing track on the right.  The left track will act as a storage siding for empty boxcars waiting to be loaded, there will also be another siding added to the left of it.

IMG_3246.jpg

The whole complex already has a good feel to it, with the size and position on the layout.  I'm really looking forward to getting stuck into this and seeing how it all unfolds.

More soon,

Jas...

Wholly cow Jas

Nothing like jumping right in on a project. I like the size and looks of it.  Should be fun to operate.  Looking forward to the progress

Yep all in Steve...

It feels good size wise too Steve, in person should be good because it will be one of the first things you see when you walk into the layout.  Sort of smacks you in the face.

Just have to get the track work sorted and ensure I get the switching aspect right (enough spots) and the keep the plausibility of it in tact with regards to the actual mill processes.

Lots of ideas running around in the old melon tonight!

Anything worth doing is worth doing well

Love it Jas. Too often the industries served, for understandable reasons, look way too small on a model railroad. Obviously, your paper mill will not suffer the same affliction.

Looks like a few hundred hours in detail work alone! Better get crackin'.

Looking good!

Who would ever think something that smells so bad could be so fun to build!  You're off to a great start.  I'm curious how you plan to lay out the tracks - or will it be as shown in the pics?

Sorting track work

Leaving aside the obvious pun in there for industrial track (!) I find this is really the first thing that needs doing for an industry.  If you can get all your cars where you want them, it gets easier to cut the plastic to make the buildings.  If you wanted to have some fun with the loading docks, you could do a shed structure that only comes part way down and have concrete platforms for loading adjacent to and between the tracks.  Then you can detail the interior with forklifts, pallets and rolls of paper . . .

speaking of the stench....

What will you use to replicate that?

Trackplan

Jas spent considerable time on his trackplan, you can see and read about it here:

no, no, no...

Scratch and Sniff will never do. It has to just plain stink as soon as you come within 20 feet of this thing. It has to be automatic and all the time. It can't rely on user interaction to activate, that's just not realistic!

Seriously ... you're off to a great start on this project Jas!

Looking good.

Having a paper mill in my own near future, I will watch this with interest. One thing I notice: in the N scale kit, Walthers is using what in HO is the recovery & boiler structure (scaled down) as the kraft mill, and there is no r&b building kit. However, one can always kitbash something else....

Paper Mill Complex - Build

Looks like a lot of fun and a good source of business for operations..    What's the purpose of that short run around track out front? ........DaveB

Since I assume Jas is probably sleeping now...

Consult the JL&T trackplan and all will become clear:

  Out of curiosity what is

Out of curiosity what is the purpose of that circled crossover? I must admit, I haven't kept up with your planning thread due to a lack of time, but I can't find the highlighted area on the plan. Perhaps I'm not putting something in perspective.

I do not see it on their

I do not see it on their either Travis. I thought the layout was given a slight revision in this area at one time and wonder if that particular cross over was from the previous plan and just left in place. It does seem to be superfluous whit the two tracks going to single in a couple of car lengths. It appears to be too short to have value as a runaround and there is another crossover further down the track that could be used as well.

Possibly there is some use I am not finding for it?

I beleive...

All the tracks in these photos are from the previous intermodal yard installation and will all be changed with the installation of the mill.

Original plan as seen at the beginning of the "change is coming" thread:

l%20Area.jpg

I agree that arrangement is a little odd and would make more sense if there were a double main line.

Cheers!

Perfect timing coming into Winter...

It has a good presence so far Alan, looking at it last night it felt right in scale. Now I just have to get all the other details sorted and figure out the final placement. Looking forward to this build and all the detailing. Jas...

Thanks for the comments so far guys...

@avrinnscale. The Mill Complex actually will use most of the old Intermodal Terminal track work with a few siding additions here and there and the removal of some track that's not needed anymore. @PhilipH. That is roughly the next step to take, I have certain processes that I want to model for ops. So I have to ensure there is enough room to spot these cars, install the track if needed, and the associated buildings & equipment to unload and load them. @Bill B, Phililp H, Alan. Perhaps a bucket of pulped newspaper soaked in bleach, and Alan's can of Beans after they have been in the sun for a week?

Thanks Steve...

These kits must be the newer run, I found a kit on eBay the other week that had the Paper Mill & Kraft Mill in it, with the Pulp Tanks but didn't have the Recovery/boiler House either. And kit bashing can be extremely fun, something I enjoy doing!

Track work questions...

@Dave B. Not sure which one you referencing but if it's the curved one nearest to the fascia it's going to be an Interchange with the Chessie System. It will run around the back of the backdrop to underneath the top deck and into staging. @Bill B. Yep spot on, asleep (was) Thanks for adding the track plan too. @Travis & Rob. For the life of me I can't remember why I put that crossover in there, but it is coming out as part of the rework of the track.

Thanks Kevin...

Was doing some research today and was wondering if you had come up with a solution for your digester? I'm going to have model one or represent it somewhere within complex. Jas...

Looks great!

I'll be watching your progress Jas, my layouts are always based on papermill operations!

Just getting to the planning stage of the next Fuerst Matthes mill now...
