ExactRail just sent me my invoice/shipping notice for my SP 2420 Gondola. I plan to model this car: http://www.railcarphotos.com/PhotoDetails.php?PhotoID=51191 Question I have is... Who makes the data decals? I've surfed the Microscale site but the images are small so I cannot tell if I'm getting what I need. The SP MOW decal sheet will provide the large reporting mark and road number for the sides. The end reporting mark and number will some from some data letter & number sheet(s). The COTS decal will be from Microscale as well. The capacity data, build date, spring, wheel and brake shoe data are what I'm wondering about.

Considering it's only letters

Considering it's only letters and numbers needed on the Gondola try Dry transfer Letters & Numbers in HO scale or N or what ever your modeling of corse this would be a last ditch effort in case you can't find what you need.

There are two good sites.

MFCL equals Modern Freight Car List.  It is a Yahoo group blog.  It covers freight cars from 1960 on.

Additionally, there is STMFC, Steam Era Freight Car Discussion Group.  This one is more useful to me as it covers up to 1960.

These guys know their stuff.  For instance, Anthony Thompson regularly posts at both sites.

Well that's all cleared that up...or not.  I was actually able to figure out what MFCL stood for all by myself.  So what's the point of the list exactly?

Edit:  Thanks for elaborating a bit Mark.  I still wonder why we need a list though.  Please forgive my newb ignorance.

OK, so these are places where one can go to discuss freight cars.  Seem like we can do that here without the need for another forum or blog.  I must be missing something.

Thanks for being so helpful Mark.

Basically the benefit of the

Basically the benefit of the MFCL YahooGroup is that it's full of people who are flat out experts at this sort of thing.  I suspect that some of them have indeed "written the book" on their subject area.

Certainly we can discus this sort of thing here, but there is a bit of wheel reinvention (or spinning) going on when the people there can literally give you an answer practically without requiring thought. And by lurking there, it leads to increasing your knowledge as well.

Thanks!

Thank-you Jeff for the explanation!

So these resources are "wells" of specific information on freight cars, all at ones fingertips so to speak, with many experts on the subject coming together in one place.
