So I decided to make my first post today.

A little background. I lost my layout space a couple years ago due to life and have been without for a couple years now but the bug to build something took over recently. I have a general idea of what i want for a plan but without a space I can't makeup the final plan.  I do know what I want in some areas so I decided to build a couple pieces that will become part of the final layout when the opportunity to build it comes along.

No set size for each piece except "big enough" to do the job. Also, I am not much of a planner so I "borrow" ideas, modify them a little, and go from there so you may see parts that look familiar or I may have butchered them enough that you won't.

A couple pictures of the progress and as always, comments, suggestions and critisisms are always welcome.

Hard to comment without an

Hard to comment without an overview of what you are thinking of, is plan A able to mesh with plan B?

Dominos and/or Layout Design Elements

If you want a head start on a future "dream layout" but have to contend with limited space for the time being, you should look into David Barrow's "Domino" approach to layout building or Tony Koester's concept of "Layout Design Elements."

The basic idea is that you can build small sections of layout that fit your current space.  And then connect them together to form a larger, future layout when space becomes available.  Each of the current sections could be modelled as individual towns that would be connected together by a future "mainline."

Also, if you have a trackplan for the two sections you're working on now, I'll like to see them.

Thanks,

Damin.

End Loop?

Hi Bob,

I started my layout 25 years ago using a pair of end loops.

Every time I completed a new section of benchwork, track and wiring, I inserted the new section and the end loops moved farther apart.

They helped me "run trains" for 18 years until I completed the layout around the 12x24 room.

It helped me stay interested, break in engines, test cars, etc. without being stuck in a single stage of construction.
