Woot!

As a subscriber to TrainMasters TV, I've been enjoying watching them on my Nexus 7 (an Android tablet).  All the while I've been wishing I could watch them on my 60" HDTV.  Well, last night I did!

And they look great on the big screen in HD!  I watched the whole series about the Springfield show again and saw detail I hadn't seen on my tablet.

How?  You need an Android device and a Chromecast ($35).  After that it gets a little geeky, but I'm sure I could walk you through the steps here if you would like.

Until now, you could only 'cast' certain videos to your TV with Chromecast, but yesterday there was a small change made to Chrome for Android that allows us to 'cast' just about any imbedded video to our TV's!

And yes, you need to be a subscriber to TrainMasters TV to cast any of their videos.

If you would like me to post a tutorial here just let me know.

How I Installed An NCE USB Adaptor Into My Fascia

Yes, I know...

After I made the above post, I remembered you could run a cord from your device (computer or tablet) to your TV and watch it that way, but the Chromecast is a much easier solution in my view (no pun intended).

And once the video starts you don't even need to keep your device (computer or tablet)  turned on......

Why do I need all that stuff?

When I can connect my VGA output to an VGA/HDMI Adapter and connect it to my 72" TV?  I do this all the time when I want to watch Canadian Curling (which sadly I can only watch online) and it works out great.

Android?

Why the Android? I that all I had to do was plug it into my laptop.

Obviously, and I addressed that in my second post.

My point here is you can now cast the videos to your $35 Chromecast device if you have one without having to run wires from your device.  You could not do that three days ago from TrainMasters TV.

I've figured out how to do so from an Android device, and am willing to write a tutorial if someone needs it.  I just thought I would let folks who have a Chromecast know.......

Download to Flashdrive

I just download the videos to a flash drive. Then I plug the flash drive in my Blu-ray player. No special equipment needed. No wireless needed. Very simple.

Newer Sony TVs

And blu ray players have an Opera browser built in. I've watched Trainmasters that way, but logging in with the remote is a real pain. pqe

Yes!

I just never wanted to run a cable across my family room to watch it on the big screen.  The wife may have seen that as even more real estate taken for my railroad........

Last night she actually asked me "What channel is that?"

Streaming Video

Be careful who you show what. The rest of the family was not aware of all stuff available, so I had that chunk of the world to my self. I mean who wants to watch a training show on the NFPA 70 (That's the National Electrical Code for those who do not know it by Standard Number). But when caught streaming some train videos, they realized that that the little box I had linked to the TV did much more (Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, Games, Flickr, Instant Messaging, Skype, Oh MY) on the big TV. Skype on the big screen is now co-opting several nights and when the crew is around I am relegated to the little screen TV, PC or Tablet.

Downloading TMTV videos

TMTV does not (yet) offer a download option, but if you are tech savvy enough, the fact the data is streaming to your device, you can find products that allow you to persist that data stream somewhere. Strictly speaking, that's not encouraged but we will look the other way if it's done for personal use (like making photocopies of copywritten material for personal use).

But if you start handing out copies of TMTV content you've captured this way to some of your train buddies, then that's a copyright violation.

So while it's possible to so capture this content, we don't encourage it. We prefer that you not describe in any level of detail how to do this on our public forums because it's pushing the envelope of violating how TMTV is intended to work - you get really cheap access as long as you don't eat into sales by making it easy for folks to pirate this content.

TMTV will be making the content downloadable for a fee.Since that means you can be getting a personal copy of material under copyright, you need to not give it away to friends. We also expect to put out a 20-hour DVD set, like "TrainMasters TV - 2014" or a single ~4-hour DVD that's "the best of TMTV 2014".

TMTV subscribers will get a heavily discounted rate on the downloadable videos and the DVDs.
