I have a small area (about 10 inches deep by 36 inches long) where I would like to model a quarry. I'm relatively new to these forums and don't see where I can "search" the forums, so I apologize if this subject request has already been asked......Grampy

search

the search feature is located in the top right of the MRH site:

It's not great, but it's all they have for now.

Or try Google! https://www.google.ca/search?q=MRH+Quarry

Some great content to be found here!

Rock On

Always good to work from photos of the prototype.

Quarries and Beyond is a good source, organized by state.

Library of Congress has many photos online, searchable by topic (the link takes you to "quarry railroad" but you can narrow down by state or other info).

Hope this helps.

where I would like to model a quarry.

they can take many forms, what part of the country do you want to model, and what mineral to mine? ......DaveB

Different approaches

A lot depends on whether you want to model the pit and where it is in relationship to the railroad.  You could model the loading facilities and never model the pit itself.

Another possibility is rather than modeling the pit, you model an UNloading facility.  A quarry can only ship multiple sizes of the same rock, an unloading facility can unload various sizes and types of multiple varieties of rock.

4 track plans for a gravel pit/crushed rock industrial railroad.

I have 2 38 x 60 inch and 2 66 x 38 inch quarry railroads that are inspired by the Branford Steam Railroad and the Milford - Bennington Railroad. The engine shuttles back and forth without a runaround by pulling the cars to the quarry and pushing them to the barge transfer pier.

The Branford Steam Railroad has its barge transfer pier enclosed to minimize the dust from unloading the hoppers so that the neighbors residing nearby in expensive waterfront homes don't complain. I would use Pikestuff 2 bay engine houses kitbashed end to end for the pier.

The gravel pit can be as elaborate of a structure as you want it to be or it could just be a couple of piles and a front end loader.

The Milford - Bennington Railroad used old Delaware & Hudson 2 bay hoppers originally with their own reporting marks stenciled in.

I added buildings across the middle of the layout so that I could visually separate the gravel pit and the pier, but any kind of scenery would work. You could also just add a cement plant or replace the pier on the other end.

Branch line from the gravel pit on the right of way to barge transfer pier with no engine facility:

Just pull last year's Model RR'er issues. They did a quarry loading project for their employee layout.

Quarry Help

I am planning a large quarry at the end of one isle.  The space is about 5' x 3'.  I currently have a ramp that leads to a 3 track platform which is at about the half way to the quarry bottom.  I own the Walthers Corner Stone rock crusher building which I plan to place on the platform where the tracks are located.

My question is, I want to move limestone from the quarry floor up to the Walthers structure, does it make sense to place a hopper type structure on the quarry floor and have a conveyer belt then move the rock to the structure for final processing and loading into the hoppers?

" make sense to place a hopper type structure on the quarry "?

I've seen them set up that way. Haul trucks dump into a rock crusher that feeds the conveyor to the plant. The rock face might be 1/4 mile from the truck dump for example so you could just model the rail car load out and the infrastructure around it and have the quarry off scene represented by the conveyor coming from it. What era are you modeling? The equipment and method would change with the years. for a good view of a modern operation check out granite rock's quarry at aromas ca. a few miles east of watsonville ca on highway 129 , google earth shows the load out and conveyers very clearly....DaveB

Quarry Idea

While visiting the Conway Senic Railway (North Conway, N.H.) last summer, the local train club, who operates on the grounds, was open to the public. I took this shot of the quarry on their layout. They model a granite quarry as opposed to a gravel quarry.

Quarry Update

Sorry for not replying back sooner to the many fine comments and suggestions. As I read through these responses, I see now that I am actually trying to model more of a gravel/rock scene rather than an actual quarry.  I have no particular era in mind, just a hillside where rock/gravel can be loaded by conveyor to a building and then into the hopper cars.

Is the Glacier Gravel Kit the only one available?  It seems too big for my area, or should I just kitbash it t make it fit?
