I have an Athearn Mike.  The motor runs, the wheels do not.  I want to remove the shell.  I called Athearn and they said to pull hard.  I've tried with no success.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

I know you probably have this info

But if not look here: http://hoseeker.net/assemblyexplosionAthearn/athearn282genesisdiagram.jpgThis shows the exploded view of the parts. It looks like the boiler should slide forward and slightly up. You may ave to remove the cab separately, or spread it apart slightly to clear the metal weights. The detail pipe holders may also be digging into the metal weights. It's a case of firm but gentle. The add on pieces are very delicate. I believe this model was made for Athearn by Roco. They had problems with the gears cracking. NWSL made replacements. Good luck, Larry

You can do it but it won't feel good

I removed the shell from a Genesis Mike once. Just once, though. It was stubborn, and a little nerve-wracking. I foget th actual steps, but I do remember that I felt like I was breaking it. I don't think they really wanted anyone taking their engines apart.

Thanks for the imputs.  The one time I tried this if felt like the boiler shell was going to crack.  So i quit.

Disassembly resource...

Paul,

You may find the following linked thread valuable.  You'll have to join the forum to see the photos, but Dr. Wayne does a good job in his text as well. He addresses the disassembly in his first paragraph.

I've taken my Mikes apart multiple times, and as is noted above, it is not particularly easy - especially the first time when you are certain it is going to break.  You gain courage with attempts.  I've since been spoiled by the design of the Trix Mikes - they are designed to come apart - yet they are more detailed.  Mind blowing!

There may be other threads in that forum, the Zealot forum that many members previously spent time on and also the Trainboard forum.

Good luck!
