AGN 502

This is my first home road power.  It's a proto 1000 RS-10 I stripped of its CP paint and repainted for the Algonquin.  The Herald and 'Algonquin' decals were custom made for me by Bill Brillinger.  Working with Bill was great.  I sent him an email one morning of what I wanted and by 3 pm they were in the mail the same day.  Now that is service!  The rest of the decals are from Microscale sets.  I added a snow plow and rubber brake hoses, but other than that, it is pretty much stock from the box.  It has a Soundtraxx Alco 244 decoder installed. I started to weather the trucks but I might hold off on the rest of the weathering until Mike Confalones weathering video comes out.  On the work bench next is a GP7 and another RS-10 with Steam Generator.

Thanks Bill the decals worked great! They were just like using Microscale decals.

Nice!

Nothing like a classic, basic black paint scheme!  Makes for a very credible model!

Thanks Alan

Alan thanks for the credible coment, that's what I am after something ordinary.  Sounds boring but I want it to look real and credible.  I figure a short line like my couldn't afford a fancy paint scheme...

I like it

Definitely looks believable to me. Nice choice on the basic 1-colour (I guess black is technically not a colour) scheme, indeed a small outfit would be more likely to choose a cost-effective image. Think of smaller Canuck railways like the Essex Terminal, or the Roberval & Saguenay.

I also like the choice of MLW product. Ontario Northland and the PGE also rostered the RS-10 (along with the obvious CN and CP) so again you are on solid ground here.

Finally your logo conjures up images of the Algoma Central's 'black bear' herald, though PGE also had a similar circle with animal drumhead.

It is this sort of picking and choosing of practices followed by the prototypes that make a freelanced railroad believable. Like Allen McClelland did with his famous V&O.

Well done Ryan.

Well done!

A very thoughtful, believable paint scheme - and it'll weather really well.

Well done!

Ted, Trevor,

Thanks for the comments.

Does anybody out there know what horn came on a typical MLW RS-10,  I am programming my decoder and would like to have it sound real also.

Thanks

Nathan K3 SuperTyphon

From 1954 onwards into the mid 1990's, the "Airhorn of Canada" was the 3-chime Nathan K3 SuperTyphon. Note the K3L and K3H are the same airhorn, L and H refer to 'low' or 'high' mounting. Also, Nathan and AirChime are the same company. Keep this info in mind whenever you are researching airhorns.

There were actually tests done on this in November 1951 conducted by the Board of Transportation, in conjunction with CN, CP, NYC(CASO), TH&B, C&O of Canada, and various railway unions. This was to address public concerns that new diesel horns 'didn't sound like trains', or didn't have the range of steam whistles.

A dozen different horns (including a CN steam whistle) were mounted on CP dynamometer car #62 and tested to find which had the best range. All the models passed, having a 1 1/2 mile range except, ironically, the steam whistle.

Of them all, the Nathan M3 was judged to be the most satisfactory, and became the Canadian de-facto standard at that time. The K3 succeeded the M3 in Nathan's catalog in 1954.

Since the RS-10 was introduced by MLW in 1954, your unit probably came with a K3 horn right from the factory.

EDIT: (additional) here is the sound you should be aiming for...

AirChime Website

Sorry I'm double posting, but I poked around a bit and found AirChime's website. Here is their railway airhorn page complete with sound samples for all horns currently in production, including the K3 http://www.airchime.com/railmodelk.asp

Thought I'd elaborate on this, as the question of 'right' horn sounds is a common one since sound-equipped DCC decoders forced modellers to take note of such things.

Love those RS-10s

Ryan,

Hey thanks for the motivation.  I been studying Mike Confalone's modeling for almost two years now and then I found you.  I want to model March 1976 (birth year and month), in NW Pennsylvania.  Love that time of the year in modeling cause no one does it.  So post some more pics for inspiration.  Looks like I need to start my own Blog.  I love old dirty equipment, luggy old Alcos and GE's.

I got one of those RS-10s at a train show in Pittsburgh for $50.  He had two and I wish I would have bought both. You cant touch them for under $100 it seems.  I put a Soundtrax decoder in mine and it is my favorite motive power at the moment.  I need to get some custom decals made up now.   .

Looks good,the truck

Looks good, the truck weathering really helps set the loco off. One suggestion I would make would be to weather the fuel tanks and such to match the trucks, but other than that I think I would let the rest go..

Weathering

John,

Thanks for the kind comments.  This loco will be getting a heavy weathering.  By 1977 it would be on in years and my short line outfit, doesn't have the funds for a new paint job..  !!
