I decided to venture into DCC this year. I just purchased the Bachman EZ Command controller, and a Bachmann Spectrum 462 loco to accompany it.

I figured everything out so far on basic operation except for the sound. The paperwork that came with the Engine and with the Controller is so vague, I'm not sure if I even have sound with this loco. The coal tender has what looks to be a speaker on the bottom, and wire connections to the loco, but I can't get any sound to work. Any help would be much appreciated.

Need More Info

What does it say on the box that the engine was packaged in - DCC on board or DCC Sound on Board? This is a starting point to let you know if you have sound.

Can't help further with operating sound (if you have it)  as I just ordered my first loco with sound this morning.

DCC

The EZ Command is a poor choice for sound and programming. Very limited DCC controller.

The Bachmann with DCC on board use low end Lenz decoders.

Both are ok and are starters.

Some Bachmann steamers come with a speaker hole in the tender BUT that does not mean it has sound capability. The box and diagram should tell you what you bought. The diagram should show the decoder and PC board the decoder plugs into. I have Bachmann DCC ready, DCC on board and DCC with sound. SoundTraxx supplies the sound decoder. It has Tsunami technology. I installed my own Tsunami Micros in the ready and on board tenders.

TCS has a new sound decoder that some are saying is better. DCC is continually evolving, Fast.

There are many variables when it comes to DCC . I have belonged to the Bachmann forums for some time.

Below is a link to the Bachmann site with lots of useful info you will need. Take time to study the various links and there are a couple Bachmann reps there also. Bachmann does have pretty good support. There are forums for different scales.

DCC and sound

This fellow is in the forum and is a super presence. Take a lot of time to read through everything, especially about SoundTraxx.

Thanks for the help guys....

Thanks for the help guys.... Well, I looked at the loco paperwork last night, didn't look at the diagram though, but it does say DCC on board, independent control of speed and lighting, but makes no reference to sound, oh well.

After browsing a few forums I see that the EZ Command isn't a highly desirable controller. Admittedly I didn't research and haven't messed with trains since I was a kid. All I'm after though is the fun of having the independent control that DCC gives you. I'm building a 4x8 HO Christmas Tree setup, so the whole thing right now is just for holiday entertainment and begin getting my toddler interested in trains, something we can continue to expand and build on each year as he gets older.

I'm bummed out about the sound though, I might attempt to add a sound decoder after the holiday.

I HIGHLY suggest a system upgrade . . .

before you start looking at sound. The NCE PowerCab will let you run and program sound decoders on a couple of locos with ease. USA street price is about $160. Understand, "program" doesn't mean "load sound files" for those decoders that allow it. Loading requires brand-specific boxes that cost the better part of $100 each. Stick with sound decoders from folks like SoundTraxx or the LokSound Select or the TCS Wow Sound. They aren't loadable, so no confusion.
