Have a Model Power Train set (guessing @ 40+ years old), most still in boxes and don't know how to assess value (this was purchased to be a toy way back when, we are not train enthusiasts).  Can someone estimate value and give me some direction?

Old Train Set

Most of the 'train set' items are not work much to the average modeler or to the collector.  Some of the old Tyco cars(like the Jello or Wonder Woman cars) can bring up to $50 each on eBay.  Most of the time, this stuff sells in the $10-20 range at best.  I would suggest you cruise around eBay on the HO pages to get an idea of what this stuff sells for.

What are your intentions?

I guess that depends on what you would like to do with it.  Sell it?  Donate it?  As Jim said, these sets do not have much value to the model railroad community but may have appeal to the vintage toy collector.  If you have the original display carton it came in, that will add value.  As to how much? Hard to say.  I would put each car at a value of $3.00 to $5.00 each and the locomotive at around $15.00 +/-.  I did a quick search on e-bay and found that the going rate is about $35.00 to $45.00 plus shipping. This is just a general starting point.  Good luck and I hope you find this info somewhat useful.

These are likely from Marx dies

As train items, you would be lucky to get $20 for the set. As old as they are, they are likely from the old Marx molds that Model Power bought up when Marx stopped making trains. With the original boxes if they are in good shape, then you might do better advertising them that way. There are people who collect old manufacture stuff. Marx collectors are some of the most aggressive. Good luck, Larry

So many trains, so little time,

Tyco Forums

A post to this site may yield a little more insight. They talk about older trains.

I suspect these are common models and not something a collector would need.

But you never know.

Little to no value...

The fact is that these models are not highly sought after by collectors or by most model railroaders.  The value of a set like this would not be any more than it was sold for out of the retail store, if that, and that is assuming you can find anyone interested in them.

Ebay

Hi Kathy,

Probably the best way to assess the value would be to sell on Ebay. If there is anyone looking for that train set ebay is the place. While it is true most model railroaders would pass on these there may be someone looking to replace a childhood toy from the past.

Good Luck,

May we suggest

With the holidays coming up, may we suggest that you find a boy in need and give him his first train set.

They are not that old.

Looking at the photo you may want to start the ebay bidding at $9.99 or buy it now for $25.00 for 7 days. Shipping will be in the $10-12 range.

As was stated earlier a great Christmas gift to a deserving boy or girl.

"HO" TRAINS ARE MY LIFE...AND "N" AND "AMERICAN FLYER" AND "LIONEL" AND EBAY.

WITHOUT CLOSETS, MODEL MANUFACTURERS WOULD NEVER BE PROFITABLE.
