I'm in the process if designing a layout (construction was supposed to be almost done by now but the planning for the track design is taking much longer than I thought it would) and badly want a Pratt truss bridge like one of the ones on the ET&WNC:

I was told that the O scale Bachmann truss bridge kit was good but wasn't terribly happy with what I got.

Has anyone cut down a Atlas truss bridge for this kind of thing? I just can't find a good representation of a NG Pratt or Howe truss bridge in O scale that doesn't look like a bad toy...

Build instead of buy?

Looks like a fun and straightforward scratch build with styrene and brass wire.

Build it

Built a 46" long wood one for our modular group that acts at a lift up to get to the interior of our setup.

Pretty straight forward in wood,  more involved in the metal if you wanted to do one like in the pic.

I guess I don't get why

I guess I don't get why nobody commercially makes a truss bridge in O scale that isn't for Lionel stuff...

I've used Central Valley components

You can use these Central Valley components.

http://www.shop.cvmw.com/Heavyduty-Laced-Box-Girders-19005.htm

They are HO scale of course but don't look to bad for a smaller On? bridge. The large laced girders scale out to 0.270" (a bit over 1 foot in O scale) It would certainly make building up one of these bridges a great deal easier.

Here's some I've used for an On30 flatcar load to give you a sense of scale.

The large girder is in the middle on the top row while CV's small girders are flanking it.

Good luck!

You may want to check out hunterline.

"O scale narrow gauge...?"

Did you try the narrow gauge shops,if there's a bridge like that on the Colorado narrow gauge they will have it? or maybe an S scale bridge?  Lionel, Atlas and MTH make some products that are well detailed and can be used for scale layouts but they would be larger and more suited to standard gauge.  Those Central Valley parts look like a good start on building a narrow gauge bridge....DaveB

Central Valley

You might want to look at Central Valley's HO bridge kits too.  It's basically a bunch of CV girders and a set of plans.

I had a good look at one of the HO kits suggested today.

No way would that work for O scale, it's be really obvious from the sizes of the girders and rivets.

Man, it never would have occurred to me that nobody makes a good O scale metal truss bridge that can be used for anything other the Lionel...

Truss bridge

Have a look at Hunterline; http://www.hunterline.com/ They recommend S scale kits for On30 modeling.

METAL, not wood...

I'm looking for a metal truss bridge as shown in the photo at the top of this thread, not a wood one...

I'm sorry, I must not be

I'm sorry, I must not be making myself clear here. This is what I'm looking for:

  • A truss bridge model that can be used for On3 or On30 and look correct for that scale.
  • Model needs to be of a metal bridge, not a wood one.
  • Bridge needs to be a decent scale model of one. Nothing toy-like or tinplate.
  • Nothing that I need to take a second mortgage out to buy.
  • Check the photo at the start of this thread, this is the type of bridge I'm looking to model, but could be one of the various types of truss bridges of that general type of span.

The problem may be, you want a silk bridge on a sow's budget...  You can get what you want in brass, but it's going to be expensive.  $300-$500, no less.

You'll have to build it yourself if you want one.

Has anyone ever seen the Atlas O scale truss bridge in person? The photos I can find are all tiny so it's tough to make out any detail.

Also, I keep seeing the expansion kit for that bridge can actually be used to build a shorter bridge by itself, is that correct?

You might try asking on the OGR magazine forum, lot's of friendly O scalers on  there.....DaveB

Atlas truss

Its for 1/48 and comes in single or double track. its 40 inches long. The extension is a girder plate section not a truss.

From the looks of your list, I would say that a scratch building project is in your future.  If money, time, and availability were no object, this is what you want:

http://www.jpstructures.com/through_truss_page.html

If you can find an O scale bridge with decently detailed parts, bashing a bridge might also be an option.

Good luck with the project,

Guy

I've given up on this...

I posted on the O scale forum, no help over there (lots of 3-rail types, didn't seem to get I was looking for of a scale model than something for a Lionel operation).

I've decided to instead go for a covered bridge, the RR I want to model had a few and I can model one of those pretty easy...

Someone makes the exact bridge in S scale, but I can scratchbuild this with plastic siding...

The Bachmann bridge is a bit

The Bachmann bridge is a bit big, but looks good with the deck kit  from Mount Blue Model Co.  This is the same deck kit formally sold by Micro Mark.

http://www.mountbluemodelco.com/structures.htm

Scroll down for the deck kit.
