Would love to see the feature for hiding posts added to the forums.  So many posts I'd love to 'hide' as they add nothing to the thread and make searching for relevant information more tedious.  Any chance of this happening?

Posts?

I thought the only posts we try to hide are the ones holding up the two story roof over the basement train room.

Well ...

... there is always the 'spam' button ... but I think that affects everyone, not just me.  Hidden posts don't go away, they remain in the thread, it is just that they don't appear on 'my' screen (other than a line that says 'post is hidden' with the option to unhide it if desired).  It is really a useful feature.

Like the function that exists on Facebook?

Is that the kind of thing you are talking about.  I wouldn't mind having an option to "hide posts/threads made by SOANDSO".

Or having a function that selects a sort of "my favorite authors" so I can select the authors I would like to see their posts as I tend to focus on a certain group.

Posts can be a problem

I have in the past used a few technics to hide posts. The most effective is to build a mountain up around them, although tall buildings are good in a city scene.

Rick,

I don't see how White Out would be very effective! Can you buy it by the gallon?

While on the subject...

............I wish there was a way to eliminate the 20 pictures posted with the initial posting showing up at the top of every page if it becomes a popular thread with multiple pages i.e. "weekend photo fun".  If there is a way to do it, I would love to know how.........thanks.

Pictures

Peter,

I try to make a point of setting a topic in the first post and adding pictures in the second post. This means that the first two post are done together.

MikeM,

I have dug a few of those post holes, They are easy to dig and hard to get out of.

I've found it useful...

I've found it useful on the RECENT POSTS page to click the hyperlink (showing x New) beneath and left of the LAST UPDATED timestamp at the right.  This skips over all the photos at the beginning--as well as all the posts I've already seen--jumping ahead to JUST THE posts that are new to ME.  (I understand one must be logged into the forum as a registered user in order to enjoy this functionality.)

This doesn't help DaveO hide his posts--but it helps herronp skip over the pictures.

I made the mistake in my blog of putting a bunch of pics in the first entry.  Once I realized that they'd show up on every subsequent page, I edited the original post, removing all but one of the pics, and put the rest in a later reply.

I used white out in the 1980s. I don't think they even make it any more?

Isn't it easier to just skip the posts and not read it? Why is this a problem for you?

Michael, This topic has

Michael,

This topic has been discussed many times in the past. What I don't understand is that they want to block posts that don't interest them, and yet have missed the important information regarding this whole thread. I am wondering if the 'cheese hasn't slipped off the cracker' as they are complaining about things they chose not to read, for the very answers they are seeking. Further blocking of posts will read to many, many more useless threads like this one. Too bad they don't just pay attention, and then there will be a lot less useless complaining about nothing. And by the way, Joe has already addressed these issues if they cared to READ. Nuff time wasted on this topic fellows. Find something constructive to complain about. PLEASE !

Why?

Because there are some folks on this forum that tend to create threads about things that are interesting to me.  And then all the jokers in the peanut gallery seem to think that they HAVE to make some comment even though it adds nothing to the thread.  Of course that leads other folks to chime in and next thing you know, you have a multi page thread which only contains a half dozen posts that I am interested in.

So, (much) later, when I want to go back and review (or try out) something that was mentioned in a thread, I again have to wade through all the garbage to find the pieces that I am looking for.

If, I can 'hide' posts in these threads as I come across them, looking for the relevant information at a later date is much easier.  Unlike some of you (apparently) I do not have an abundance of time (too many things competing for it); so I would like to only have to look at the trash once.

@ RandallG ... please include link(s) to the many threads this has been previously discussed in -- I would love to see Joe's comments concerning this issue.  Thanks.

This is also related to the lack of a navigation bar at the top of the pages, so one has to go to the bottom of the page to move around ... easy to fix, not sure why it has not been done yet.

nav help

Dave,

I'll come out of the peanut gallery and try to suggest something I do.  Since I have to go to the bottom for navigation, I now have a mouse with a wheel.  A few spins with my finger, and I'm usually there.  I can also depress the wheel, and get a circular icon on-screen.  The farther the mouse pointer is below the icon, the faster I scroll move down, and similarly for up.  Let the techs chime in on the particulars, I just bought it and plugged it in.

To archive much of the valuable info in the posts, I go to the browser bar, highlight the path, copy, then paste and store it in my bookmarks.  And I use many sub, sub-sub, and sub-sub-sub folders to categorize info.  If there is a lot of similar info, I just open a note pad file and store the paths, along with other notes.                                               The categorization is key:  if you can't find where you saved it, it's gone.

The fix you inquired about at the end:  I think that was addressed a long time ago as a peculiarity of Druple, the software that this forum is constructed within.

Hope this helps a little.

O Dave

Joe has talked about the new planned update to this forum software that will allow paging at the top and bottom. Perhaps over the winter months. He also has stated that he has no plans on modifying anything until the newer version is installed, but will endeavor to fix any bugs or glitches as soon as/if they occur.

As far as useless postings are concerned, it is up to the community to police themselves as to posting junk. Maybe at some point they will want to search for info and will run into the same frustration you seem to be having.  For now, just relax and take it in stride.  Perhaps the new version will address some of these things.  If you need more information on this, try sending an email to Joe. He can give you the lowdown regarding the software upgrade and any time table he may have on this.

Hope this helps.

Why not just copy the stuff you like as you find it and then put it all in a blog called "stuff I approve of"?  Then you should be able to find it at any time..DaveBranum

Copying ...

... knew this would come up.  I have tried it, and it works ... up to a point.  The problem comes about on those occasions that you want to 'see' something that you 'hid' earlier (which would not have been copied and saved for the same reason that it was hidden).  Easy enough to go back and unhide the relevant post (and rehide it once my curiosity has been satisfied).

"Trash" (and "garbage") were a poor choice of words, and I apologize for using them.  What I really meant was 'posts that are not relevant to the material that I am interested in'.  Often these are questions, which in and of themselves are good posts and useful, but once the answer has been given, I really don't care to see the question any longer.  This can also include humor (some of which appears in this thread); I do enjoy a chuckle and got a few from those of you who commented on hiding structural posts --- even brought up fond memories of my first layout in the basement with BIG mountains to hide the posts holding up the joists of the floor above.  But, had those comments appeared in the thread concerning sound on foam (for instance), I'd like to be able to 'hide' them after getting my chuckle; just makes going back through the thread so much easier.

Yes, aware of the issue with the navigation bars (still think it is a very easy fix).  Messaged Joe about it many, many moons ago, was told about the upcoming 'new and improved' format ... nothing heard after that.  I can only hope that the new and improved format that is in the pipeline, will offer the user more control of the view.  There really should be no reason for me to have to cut and paste things on my computer, when the  information is already stored on a server.

Copying info only

I also have had times when I wanted to go back and try to find a post that had specific info, but usually without success.

What I have started doing, and I have seen a couple of other members mention doing this - where I got the idea - is to set up a word file on my home computer, then highlight the info in the post I want to save, and copy/paste it into my word files (weathering, track laying, whatever).  This copies the text and the pictures.  Of course this is only for my personal reference so I hope it is not ruled illegal.

Forum post hidding and tracking

I would like to be able to separate the wheat from the chafe as well and be able to track posts I want to follow, but not comment on.

Yes I can copy and paste the info I want or bookmark the link, but as I read things at work, home, and now occasionally on the go I would have to sync the three things.

It would be nice to have buttons/links at the bottom of each post:  Was this helpful yes/no? and if the post gets enough un-helpful clicks it is hidden automatically with the option to un-hide.

I would also like to track threads I'm interested in by clicking a track button and not have to add a comment to track a thread.

As for the same things being asked again and again, if the search engine was better, we probably would have less of that, there will be still people who ask without searching, but with a good search engine the first person who realizes that its a duplicate can search for the duplicate and point to the old thread.  Maybe RandallG would have included that link in his post if he could find it.

I don't know how many posts are made per day, but I can see not being able to keep up with them all and/or not finding a topic that has already been discussed and starting a new thread.

Even in this thread there are 9 out of 25 (36%) posts currently that do not have anything to do with the real topic, everyone wants to be a comedian I guess.
