Not much detailed information on the Fleishmann Roco Z21 system, but it does appear to offer Cab View operation with realistic control functions.  This would be like combining a railroad computer game with a model railroad.  The demonstration video shows a virtual cab interior with a video cab camera view of the model railroad.  Control would be by touching the controls on the virtual cab screen.  All this would be displayed on your choice of wireless device... smart phone, i-pad, etc.  Perhaps the desk-top control stand such as used with computer games could also be used.  Steam controls might also be modeled.  The Z21 is not tied to a proprietary control.

An interesting operating challenge is the old Espee line between Gerber and Dunsmuir.  This is undulating territory with spectacular bridges on the Shasta Dam relocation.  The cab-forward steam locomotives would offer the ideal Cab View.  Steam (no dynamic brake) and caboose operation would challenge train handling and air brake skills.

All for it...

We need something to breath some innovation into a control system. I have a retired phone that would do well as a throttle. What is important to me about the announcement and release of the ECoS and z21 is they are multiprotocol systems. This means using LENZ and LOCONET throttles together on the same layout is possible, natively (no extra parts or computers) at the same time. From what I can tell, one could plug a NCE system into the sniffer port then enjoy further throttle compatibility. This all seems good for the club and the consumer. Might even spark some of the American DCC vendors into rethinking their systems and make them more compatible and easier to use. Otherwise they'll just be left in the dust. Chris

Z21 a tough sell at $560

Z21 is a tough sell at $560. However, as noted before: used computer with JMRI $0, new WiFi router $20, USB DCC control bus interface (e.g. LocoBuffer) $70, phone App $0 to $10 for a total of $100. JMRI can also be configured to manage multiple control buses you just have to add additional USB interfaces all for less than half the cost of the Z21. Yes you will still be missing some of the whiz bang like cab video and RailCom, but except for a few of us techies low on the want list for the majority of users.
