Verne Niner

I have been too busy modeling to post progress, but I finished a Mexican oxcart (called a carreta) and have a few photos to share:

The carreta is basically part of an old Revell western kit dating back to the late 1950s. I added scratchbuilt wheels, a hay bale load, and a pair of oxen.

The driver is from a set of figures from Buffalo Landing, I ground off the '40s American-style hat and gave him something more appropriate for my modeling era. The hay bales were made following the techniques in my article published in the current issue of the NG&SL Gazette. The 'stakes' are natural wood twigs I picked up while hiking in the desert.

The oxen are modified longhorns from Aspen Modeling Co., I shortened the horns to be more appropriate for oxen. These figures, like all of Alan's work, were a delight to paint.

This was a fun build, and will be positioned in front of my mission...the padre will be talking to Paco, the driver. I still need to add reins in Paco's hands, and the strapping they use to lash the oxens' horns to the yoke...details that can only be added once it is fixed in place.

Photos make the difference

I always find photographing my models improves my modeling...after posting these, I realized two things...I need to model the axle under the frame, something I never considered earlier. Also, Paco will be riding lower on the front of the cart, but he looks good on the second stack of bales!

My most important modeling tool, after a hobby knife and a photo of the prototype, is my camera!

Hay bale pics

These large pictures show off your hay bales better than those in the Gazette!

I saw hay bales in the background of some of your other pictures on this site; could you give us some close ups when you have time.

Thank you.

Nice modeling

I don't think Paco will want to apply the strapping to the oxens' horns and to the yoke. He, the oxen, looks like is discontent as it is. I can see it in his eyes.

Yes the camera will find things that the eye has missed.

Carreta

Great work, per usual. Just a hint -- when you add that axle, how about taking just a little gloss black or dark brown paint and add a little grease around the axle and the hub.  ....
