After spending much time wrestling with some design shortcuts I took 10 years ago, I decided to scrap the current Penn Lake, and start over.  My library of Chuck Yungkurth books inspired me to actually model some of the operations I currently represent with staging.  And finally, my advancing middle, is no longer compatible with some of the choices I made a decade ago.

Not being able to acquire anymore real estate, I had to go up to reach my twin goals of an urban industrial area and mountainous mining location.  So the new Penn Lake will be a two level affair.  One for the urban area, and one for the mines.

The current layout will be around a while longer, as I slowly gather the materials for the new layout.

Track Plans

The current version of the PL 8 track plan. Some structures are shown, but the positions aren't fixed in stone yet.  I debated between using a helix and a nolix.  I ended up choosing the helix to eliminate one door crossing and the need for the main loop through the lower level twice,

Lower level: main yard, engine terminal and industrial area.

Middle level: main line run, and town areas.n%20Line.jpg

Upper level: smaller yard, and mining areas.
